As the 20th century dawns, changes are on the horizon. Faculty members Henry and Jessie Eldridge Southwick along with William H. Kenney buy the college, and a fresh era begins. Dr. Emerson retires, making way for Shakespearean scholar and actor William J. Rolfe to take up the presidential mantle.
Under the stewardship of the third president, Henry Lawrence Southwick, Emerson College unfolds its acting and stagecraft study section, bringing a delightful twist to the college curriculum in the early 1900s. 30 Huntington Avenue in Copley Square becomes the newest academic sanctuary as Emerson becomes the vanguard of children's theater programs at a collegiate level.
Making strides into the future, Emerson bags its first piece of real estate in 1930 by buying a women's dormitory building at 373 Commonwealth Avenue. The same year, the reins of the college are handed over to the Board of Trustees, marking a turning point in Emerson's illustrious history. When the gavel of presidency falls into the hands of Harry Seymour Ross in 1931, it introduces Boston’s airwaves with Emerson’s very first Radio Broadcasting course.
