History Emerson College

The curtain ascends in the year 1880, as Charles Wesley Emerson steps onto the stage of education by founding the Boston Conservatory of Elocotion, Oratory, and Dramatic Arts. With each passing year, the institution grew, transforming its identity and expanding its horizons. From being christened as the Monroe Conservatory of Oratory, in honor of Charles Emerson's mentor, Professor Lewis B. Monroe, it eventually became the Emerson College in 1939.

Picture this - ten enthusiastic learners huddling within the vintage Pemberton Square premises as the first tale of this monolith of education unfolds. The College, expanding its wings, moves to the South End of Boston, setting up its first library in 1892 and firmly extricating its roots within the academia.

Fast forward to 1894 when, arm in arm with Henry Lawrence Southwick, the College acquires the Boston School of Oratory, and embarks on a new journey. As the 20th century dawns, changes are on the horizon. Faculty members Henry and Jessie Eldridge Southwick along with William H. Kenney buy the college, and a fresh era begins. Dr. Emerson retires, making way for Shakespearean scholar and actor William J. Rolfe to take up the presidential mantle.

Under the stewardship of the third president, Henry Lawrence Southwick, Emerson College unfolds its acting and stagecraft study section, bringing a delightful twist to the college curriculum in the early 1900s. 30 Huntington Avenue in Copley Square becomes the newest academic sanctuary as Emerson becomes the vanguard of children's theater programs at a collegiate level.

Making strides into the future, Emerson bags its first piece of real estate in 1930 by buying a women's dormitory building at 373 Commonwealth Avenue. The same year, the reins of the college are handed over to the Board of Trustees, marking a turning point in Emerson's illustrious history. When the gavel of presidency falls into the hands of Harry Seymour Ross in 1931, it introduces Boston’s airwaves with Emerson’s very first Radio Broadcasting course.

As the college grows, so do its academic offerings. The mid-century witnesses the genesis of Emerson's Speech Pathology and Broadcast Journalism undergraduate programs, both icons in their own right. Emerson now increasingly began to exert influence beyond the realms of conventional academia.

In a post-war world juggling transitions and transformations, Emerson College strikes a chord of gender balance riding on the G.I. Bill of Rights, and a progressive Broadcasting curriculum. Boylston Green, the then-president, plays an instrumental role in enhancing the extracurricular life within campus walls presenting the first chapter of Emerson's student newspaper, the Berkeley Beacon, in 1947.

The following years see the birth of WERS, the first educational FM station in New England with a power of 300 watts by 1953. Emerson's journey across continents as a beacon of education is only just begun. Yet, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. In 1952, the college touches the brink of bankruptcy, only to be rejuvenated by a successful grassroots campaign.

By 1979, Emerson was contemplating a move to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, looking at merger plans with Pine Manor College, but this fell through. President Koenig nonetheless had ambitious renovation proposals, including the establishment of a new radio/audio complex.

The 1980s saw soaring discussions about relocating Emerson College to Lawrence, Massachusetts. This plan too was eventually scrapped, but 44.5 km of contemplation had brought about profound changes. Emerson began expanding through the purchase of new buildings and transitioning from Back Bay to the Boston Theater District.

Emerson's relocation to the Washington Street Theatre District in the mid-1990s marked the beginning of a definite shift in its physical location. By 2006, with the opening of a brand new residence hall, Emerson hoped to accommodate up to 75% of its students in on-campus housing. Despite navigating a few rough waters, Emerson consistently expanded and evolved.

By the time M. Lee Pelton took charge as president in 2010, Emerson had blossomed into a mammoth institution. The opening of the newly renovated Paramount Center and the addition of the Max Mutchnick Campus Center attested to the continuous growth. The following years did harbour trials for Emerson, such as student protests and lawsuits, but the institution pressed on undeterred.

As we close this chapter in 2023, we see Jay M. Bernhardt assuming the role of President after leaving his mark at The University of Texas at Austin. The journey of Emerson College, enshrined in pastoral academia and forward-thinking innovation, is a story that continues to unfold, one illustrious scene at a time.
