Back in 1876, our journey started with a man named A. W. Mell. He had the vision to establish a fundamentally private institution, the Glasgow Normal School and Business College in Glasgow, Kentucky. Nearly a decade later in 1884, the school decided to pack up and move to a different location - Bowling Green. With a new locality came a new name, now known as the Southern Normal School and Business College.
Fast forward another six years to 1890, and we see the launch of Potter College, a private institution dedicated to offering quality education, specifically to women. It was the brainwave of one Pleasant J. Potter. Things began to accelerate even faster in 1906. Henry Hardin Cherry, at this point, took over the Southern Normal School and sold it. He then took the reins as president of a new establishment, the Western Kentucky State Normal School. His vision was about to come into existence, a project that was duly recognized by the Kentucky General Assembly.
Everything that once belonged to Southern - its students, its structures - was now a part of the new school. The first day of class? That was January 22, 1907. Just two years later, Potter College had to shut its doors. But it’s closure was our gain as Western got hold of its land, buildings and legacy.
Following this, in 1911, we waved goodbye to our old haunt and relocated to the place we currently call home, the former property of Potter College. Not just the location, but over the next decade, the school was allowed by the state to bestow four-year degrees hence rebranding it as the "Western Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College" in 1922. Our students received their first four-year degrees in 1924.
As time galloped forward, the school fused with Ogden College in 1927. Did you know Ogden College was our next-door neighbor? In 1930, we underwent yet another name change and were from then onwards recognized as the "Western Kentucky State Teachers College". Through the twists and turns of our journey, in 1931, the school got the green light to award the Master of Arts degree.
Are you keeping count? You guessed it - another renaming happened in 1948 when we became simply "Western Kentucky State College". The next highlight of our journey is in 1963, when we merged with Bowling Green College of Commerce, earlier known as the Bowling Green Business University. This institution somewhat used to be our sibling back in the day when it was part of the Southern Normal School but was sold off by Henry Hardin Cherry when Southern Normal School was given to the state.
This was a time of great change and structural face-lift for us as well. A shift in gears resulted in the institution breaking down into separate colleges. An unexpected move? Perhaps! But Bowling Green College of Commerce managed to maintain its unique identity regardless. Around this time, the Graduate School also emerged as a separate entity. Two years later, in 1965, three more colleges were created. And voila, in 1966, we got our present name -Western Kentucky University.
Right from our inception, we have proudly been known by many as “Western” ashighlighted in our spirited fight song, "Stand Up and Cheer". But lately, you might have heard us being referred to as "WKU". Things changed on July 1, 2017, when Timothy C. Caboni became the 10th university president. Since that time to the present, Western Kentucky University has been fortunate to have a total of ten presidents, devoting their relentless efforts in taking our institution further.
But let's not forget, there was an interim president, Paul Cook serving from 1985 to 1986, during a brief transition. Today, as we reflect upon our history, we cherish each name, date, and event, for they are the pieces that made us into the esteemed institution we are today. Each part of our journey is a testament to change & progress, and it’s this legacy we continue to carry forward. Here at WKU, we engage, learn, and work towards creating a brighter future for you, our students!
