In 1881, a profound mark was etched on the educational landscape of the Dakota Territory. On the 21st of February, a unique academic institution, christened the Dakota Agriculture College, came into existence. Isn't it fascinating that this happened a whole six years before South Dakota even became a state? The territorial legislature funnelled funds into this project, hoping for exponential growth. An inaugural building stood proud in 1883, heralding the beginnings of a future stronghold of higher education in the region.
Dreams turned into reality slowly but steadily. The late 19th century and early 20th century proved incredibly pivotal with several critical expansions funded. Changes were on the horizon. The Dakota Agriculture College went on to transform, and in 1904, it took up the mantle as the South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Have you pondered what drove this mouthful of a name change?
You'd be right in speculating that this comprehensive name reflected a more comprehensive education offering. The Alumni Association played a pivotal role in this transformation and promoted the renaming process, which kickstarted in 1962. Two years later, in 1964, the title of our beloved College further evolved into South Dakota State University, a name that has continued to resound in the circuits of world education today.
From its humble beginnings as a singular college, the academic structure experimented with growth within. It explored groundbreaking paths and branched into five pivotal divisions in 1923. These included Agriculture, Engineering, General Science, Home Economics, and Pharmacy. Over time, Nursing emerged as a new entity in 1956, and a formal graduate school began operations shortly after in 1957.
Once the University had its name in 1964, another cascade of name changes began. Seven vibrant colleges sprouted from the five divisions: Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Home Economics, Nursing, Pharmacy, and the Graduate School. In 1974, another addition to this balanced tableau came in the shape of College of General Registration, which is now known as the College of General Studies.
The very next year in 1975, the Division of Education sprouted. This evolution gave birth to the Honors College in 1999, rounding out the academic offerings. Subsequently, in 2009, a significant consolidation took place. Two colleges and seven departments merged to create the College of Education and Human Sciences.
Fast forward to 2017 and we see another vital restructuring with a few name changes. The updated roster of colleges now reads as follows: College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences; College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; College of Education and Human Sciences; College of Nursing; College of Pharmacy & Allied Health Professions; Graduate School; Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering; University College; and Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College.
Particular noteworthy in the annals of the University's history is the day of the 23rd of May 2016. Barry H. Dunn, an alumnus of the University and his wife became integral parts of the SDSU story. Dunn was announced as the 20th President of South Dakota State University, having previously served as the Dean of SDSU's College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. His formality inauguration didn't take place until later that year, on September 29, 2016.
