What does it take to build an institution from scratch? Passion, perseverance, and a vision of transforming lives. The story of St. Francis College bears testament to this. In the year 1858, the dynamic duo, Brother John McMahon and Brother Vincent Hayes, journeyed from the Roundstone Monastery in Ireland all the way to the United States. Their mission? To establish an academy in Brooklyn, dedicated to enlightening young minds of the underprivileged youth. A vision instigated by none other than Reverend John Loughlin, the notable Bishop of Brooklyn.
In the historic year of 1859, the foundation of St. Francis Academy was laid, marking the inception of the first Catholic school in Brooklyn. With just 30 students and six brothers, their journey began under the guidance of Brother John McMahon, one of the founding members, who also served as the first President. Their humble abode was located on 300 Baltic Street in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Gradually, they expanded to include six row houses and a former Methodist Church on Baltic Street.
Fast forward to 1868, the academy was officially incorporated. A significant milestone was reached in May 1884 when it acquired charter status. Endowed with the same powers as other universities and colleges of New York State, St. Francis Academy underwent a transformation to become St. Francis College. By June 1885, the college had started awarding Bachelor of Arts degree. The expanding college soon sprawled across buildings on Baltic and Butler Streets, between Court and Smith Streets.
June 1892 saw another significant achievement in its chronicles - the bestowment of the first Bachelor of Science degree. Moving with the times, the institution led the way by fielding the first collegiate men's basketball team in New York City in 1896. The college's charter from the State of New York was received in 1902, leading the college to offer only post-secondary courses thereafter.
However, the institution's growth didn't always follow an upward trajectory. As the United States entered World War I in 1917, the college faced its first major challenge - a drastic drop in enrolments due to students enlisting in the military. In 1926, the Franciscan Brothers demonstrated their resilience and launched a successful fundraising campaign dubbed the "Great Drive", raising an impressive US$250,000 and inaugurated a new facility on Butler Street.
The onset of World War II saw the enrolment drop further. Despite the initial blip, the student demographics started showing a shift, reflecting the growing number of Italian-American students. The lowest enrolment was recorded at 45 during the spring semester of 1944, primarily comprising of the Franciscan order members and those exempt from military service. After the war, as the G.I. Bill came into effect providing tuition coverage for returning soldiers, enrolment soared to 878.
In 1957, the independent status of the college was recognized by the Regents of the University of the State of New York. This milestone allowed St. Francis students to avail federal financial aid. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education granted accreditation to the college in 1959, paving the way for an expansion program. Five office buildings were acquired from the Brooklyn Union Gas Company in the Brooklyn Civic Center for a whopping $5 million.
The year 1963 marked a major shift for the college as it relocated to Remsen Street, where they had purchased five office buildings. Throughout the 60s and 70s, the college worked on expanding its facilities significantly. In 1969, the college opened its doors to women, becoming co-educational.
The college underwent further expansion in the new millennium. Fall 2005 saw the opening of the 35,000-square-foot Frank and Mary Macchiarola Academic Center, complete with a state-of-the-art library and advanced facilities. In 2022, the college made a significant move to a new campus at 179 Livingston Street.
Today, after nearly 60 years, St. Francis College proudly stands at 179 Livingston Street nestled in bustling Downtown Brooklyn. Progress, perseverance, and passion have fuelled the journey of St. Francis College from a humble academy to a renowned educational institution.
