Once upon a time, in the year of 1926 to be precise, our great Long Island University (LIU) made its first appearance on this planet. You bet it wasn't a simple hi-hello, but a heartfelt promise to spread the light of knowledge far and wide. Bro-sis duo, Tristram and Ethel Pratt initiated this epic journey, to make quality education accessible for folks who normally wouldn't get a chance; quite a noble thought, don't you reckon?
First things first, did you know that LIU birthed itself right in Brooklyn, the land of dreams and aspiration? In its initial days, they weren't rolling out degrees or anything, mind you. LIU was all about providing vocational education and skills training to the local folks. Simple gist - Big ambitions, small beginnings. Sounds like Bollywood, doesn't it?
Now here brings us to an interesting trivia. The name of our dear LIU was initially suggested as ‘New York Polytechnic University’. A fancy name no doubt, yet they decided to roll with ‘Long Island University’. Thank god, one less tongue twister for us all! And guess what? They started with only 312 students and a handful of teachers, just like a big, intellectual family, right?!
Zoom in to 1935 and our beloved LIU set on a path to ‘bigness’. It started to spread its tentacles across the world of education! Bang on, it got recognized as a degree-granting institution, a big moment indeed. Can't help but share, the first chap to become a ‘graduate’ of LIU was William M. Scholl, who later became a renowned figure in the field of medicine, some real hero stuff there!
Jumping to 1951, something extraordinary happened; the university stepped out of its Brooklyn baby-cradle and decided to play in the big league. Here’s a cheers to the ‘first branch campus’ in LIU Post of Brookville, Long Island. Now that's a growth spurt we call applaud to, right?
LIU had tasted the sweet fruit of expansion, and it was ripe for more. Just a decade later, in 1962, they laid the cornerstone for their first ever overseas arm.
