In the heart of Philadelphia gathered 68 pioneering pharmacists, way back in 1821. Their dream? To catapult scientific standards to another level and create competent apprentices and scholars. Their meeting place? The venerable Carpenter's Hall. Main objective? A school. Not just a regular one but a special place meant to enhance their craft and keep guard on the pharmaceutical market. Their intention? To shield it from the storm of inferior, adulterated or harmful substances that often found their way into it.
No sooner said than done. Classes sprang up, marking it as the premier institution focusing on pharmacy in the United States. Come 1825, and they brought into existence the country's first academic journal dedicated solely to pharmacy. Their cause took a formal turn when they penned down a constitution, reaffirming their noble intent.
The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, as it was called back then, evolved into the University of Sciences (USciences). The charter, received in 1822, made it America's first educational institution solely committed to the field of pharmacy.
Meanwhile, another significant event occurred in 1851 when 36 zealous minds embarked on their academic journey at the then newly founded Saint Joseph's College. Nestled next to the Old St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church on Willings Alley, this institution housed between South 3rd and 4th streets, and Walnut and Spruce streets in Philadelphia.
The college soon grew restless in its initial quarters and sought a new address. The year was 1866 when St. Joe's moved to a sprawling block on Philadelphia's Girard Avenue, wedged between 17th and 18th Streets. It became the present-day home of Saint Joseph's Preparatory School.
A splendid future awaited St. Joe's as it took another leap forward in November 1927. A whopping million dollars raised enabled the purchase of 23 sprawling acres and, the creation of a stunning, modern, Gothic architectural marvel as their main academic building on the City Avenue Hawk Hill. Truly, a triumph for the students and community.
The university's seal speaks volumes about its history and aspirations. Sharing three symbols with other Jesuit institutions, it is a blend of the noble Loyola family's kindness symbolized by wolves over a kettle, the first three Greek letters of Jesus's name, and the depiction of the brave seven sons of the House of Loyola.
