History Bowdoin College

The journey of Bowdoin College is as compelling as the education it imparts. The legacy of this esteemed institution starts in the year 1794, when it got its official recognition from the Massachusetts State Legislature. Later, it came under the wings of the Maine Legislature. The accolade of being its namesake goes to the former Massachusetts governor James Bowdoin, thanks to the benevolence of his son James Bowdoin III.

The pivotal period of the institution's growth traces back to the 1820s, an era marked by Maine's set up as an independent state owing to the Missouri Compromise. It was during this time that Bowdoin saw some illustrious students like future U.S. President Franklin Pierce and prominent literary philosophers Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1825. Here's an interesting nugget - Pierce and Hawthorne went on to form a militia company, the 'Bowdoin Cadets.' Quite an achievement, isn't it?

Now, what if I told you that Bowdoin was more than just an educational institution? From its inception, it played a crucial role in polishing the sons of the political elite, catering extensively to the affluent conservatives from Maine. The entry ticket in the first half of the 19th century wasn't easy, students had to show a certificate of "good moral character" coupled with proficiency in Latin and Ancient Greek, geography, algebra, and some scaffolded essential works of Cicero, Xenophon, Virgil, and Homer. Not a child's play, right?

But, that's not all. The tiny town of Brunswick bore the beginning of the influential anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, as Harriet Beecher Stowe penned down the influential narrative while her husband taught at Bowdoin. The Battle of Gettysburg saw Joshua Chamberlain, both alumnus and professor of Bowdoin, command the 20th Maine in defense of Little Round Top. Later, Chamberlain went on to serve as the governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries ushered in significant figures in Americana. One of Bowdoin's brightest feathers was Augustus Stinchfield, co-founder of the Mayo Clinic, who emerged from the now-closed Medical School of Maine in 1868. Charles Morse, the class of 1877, created ripples in the ice business of New York, marking an essential cause of the financial Panic of 1907. As the narrative shifts towards Arctic explorations, we have Robert E. Peary, the class of 1877, who led a triumphant quest to the North Pole in 1908. Donald B. MacMillan, a member of Peary's crew, explored the farthest recesses of Greenland, Baffin Island, and Labrador in the schooner.

Fast forward to 1970 and 1971, Bowdoin made two significant changes. It was one of the few liberal arts schools to make SAT optional in the admissions process, and after posing as a small men's college for nearly 180 years, it opened its gates to women. Fraternities were phased out in 1997, paving the way for the establishment of the college-owned social houses.

An exciting turn of the tale happens in 2008 when Bowdoin announced that it would eliminate loans for students on financial aid. Instead, these loans would be replaced with grants starting from the 2008-09 academic year. The intention was clear - they didn't want students to make career choices based on their ability to repay student loans, but rather on their talents, interests, and potential in a particular field.

In 2009, a generous donation of US$10 million by Subway Sandwiches co-founder and alumnus Peter Buck, coupled with successful completion of a $250-million capital campaign, enabled the college to carry out substantial construction projects. A new fitness center named after Peter Buck and renovated art museum leave a mark on the college's physical legacy.

Fast forward to July 1, 2023, we have Safa Zaki holding the reins as the first woman ever to assume the presidency of the college. The journey of Bowdoin College thus continues with confidence and conviction, unconstrained by history, yet mindful of its legacy.
