G.W. Thompson, a visionary educator, took a leap of faith in 1878, and laid the bedrock for a college that would one day be known as Champlain. An institution designed with the guiding ethos of equipping young men with skills to negotiate with the myriad business challenges life had to offer, it all started as the Burlington Business School.
Time moved ahead and so did the school. In 1884, a sweeping and progressive wave of change took over when E. George Evans took the reins. The institution welcomed women, erasing the gender divide, and renaming itself as Queen City Business College. The relentless spirit of progress didn’t stop there. The college moved ahead, quite literally, by changing its location; first to Bank Street in 1905 and then to Main Street in 1905.
1920 brought forth another critical change. A. Gordon Tittemore grasped control of the college and christened it the Burlington Business College. The establishment continued to expand. In 1958, when the college established itself at its current location, nestled in the Hill Section of Burlington, the name Champlain College was written into its essential being.
The next decade played a transformational role in the college’s growth. In 1965, dormitories made their debut, with Jensen and Sanders Halls opening their doors to students. As the 70s brought in new social concerns, Champlain responded by initiating programs in social services. Fast forward to 1982, and there stood the Willett Foster Hall, the new abode for the Engineering Technology Division. Hauke Family Campus Center was introduced in the campus landscape in 1989.
The 90s marked the arrival of Champlain's first bachelor's degree programs in Business and Accounting, painting a promising vision for the future. The technological boom ushered in the dawn of online education in 1993. A Master's degree program in Managing Innovation & Information Technology sprouted in 2002, providing a contemporary take on the changing education structure. Alongside these academic milestones, Champlain witnessed the opening of the Robert E. and Holly D. Miller Information Commons in 1998, and the S.D. Ireland Family Center for Global Business & Technology in 2004.
2005 heralded a series of important events. The inauguration of David F. Finney as Champlain's seventh president was trailed by the launch of a Master of Business Administration program. The Emergent Media Center, Champlain College Center for Digital Investigation (now known as the Senator Patrick Leahy Center for Digital Investigations), and the Conference and Event Center were cornerstones of President Finney's vision. Focused on student entrepreneurship, the novel BYOBiz program saw the light of day in 2006.
The flame of international reach and inclusivity shone bright when the college set up its first abroad campus in Montreal, Canada, in 2007, followed by its twin in Dublin, Ireland, a year later. In sync with its dynamic evolution, Champlain started the Core Division and the Life Experience & Action Dimension (LEAD) program in 2009.
In 2010, Champlain broadened its educational horizon by introducing an MFA in Emergent Media and a BS in Environmental Policy. With a focus on literacy and publisher relations, the Center for Financial Literacy and the Champlain College Publishing Initiative were set into motion. The proactive and eco-friendly renovation of Roger H. Perry Hall earned it a LEED Platinum certification in 2012, which now houses several important departments and functions as the Student Welcome Center.
In 2012, the largest grunt ever in the college's history flooded in from the Stiller Family Foundation, as a generous donation of $10 million. This led to the birth of the Stiller School of Business and the Perry Hall Welcome and Admission Center, among other developments. The following year the college was featured in The Atlantic's “American Futures” series, showcasing its innovative streak.
David F. Finney's retirement set the stage for Donald J. Laackman to take up the mantle as Champlain's eighth president in 2014. Laackman’s arrival opened another chapter of Champlain’s evolution, promising a continuum of a legacy that had begun more than a century ago.
