History The University of Vermont

Picture this. It's 1791, Vermont becomes the 14th U.S. state, and in the same brushstroke of history, initiates the foundation of a private university. A decade later, the same institution, now known as the University of Vermont (UVM), welcomes its first group of students. Daniel C. Sanders, hired in 1800, takes the helm as the first president and sole faculty member, a role he maintained for seven years. With Sanders leading the charge, instruction started in 1801, paving the way to the first graduating class of 1804.

Moving forward to 1865, landmark changes unfurl as UVM unites with Vermont Agricultural College, transforming into the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. An impressive 150,000 acres of land was bestowed upon UVM, which later got sold for a substantial $122,626. Ever wondered about the mastermind behind the University's early funding and planning? That honor goes to Ira Allen, deemed as UVM's founder, whose generous gift of a 50-acre parcel set the stage for the University's establishment. This cherished land stands today as the university's main green, adorned by a statue of Allen.

Burlington citizens played their spirited part in UVM's history too. Their earnest contributions towards the university's first building inadvertently solidified their partnership with the University. When an unfortunate fire razed the edifice, the citizens stepped up, funding its reincarnation. This building, reminiscent of the New England mills, came to be endearingly termed the "Old Mill". Look to the north of the main green and you will find a statue of French general the Marquis de Lafayette, who played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, and also laid Old Mill's cornerstone.

UVM's charter didn't play favorites. It was the first American higher education institution that categorically stated its impartiality towards any religious groups or denominations. The university's inclusivity only amplified with time. In the face of existing customs, UVM admitted two women as students in 1871, while in 1875 and 1877, they recognized women and African Americans respectively into Phi Beta Kappa — the country's oldest collegiate academic honor society.

Noted U.S. Representative and Senate member from Vermont, Justin Smith Morrill, author of the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act, served as a trustee of the university from 1865 to 1898. This Act was instrumental in establishing federal funding for U.S. land-grant colleges and universities. Fast forward to 1924, UVM's WCAX — now WVMT; became the harbinger of Vermont's first radio broadcast. Run by enthusiastic UVM students and faculty, it later left the University's hands in 1931.

Delving into the latter 20th century, UVM's political activism made waves. Student protests in 1957 against a motel owner's prejudiced refusal of service to an African American woman led Vermont General Assembly to outlaw public discrimination. Challenging the systemic bias of the past, a "Kake Walk" tradition involving blackface was abolished in 1969 post student and community outcry. In 1972 Michael Parenti, a Marxist political science professor, was denied tenure despite faculty backing. His anti-war demonstrations earned him the wrath of the board of trustees. Parenti wasn't one to back down - he filed a federal suit and eventually settled out of court for $15,000.

Engaged in global issues, UVM students pressed for a divestment from apartheid South Africa in 1985. The successful culmination of the protest ensured the University divested by December that year. UVM's divestment streak continued with "Sudan-friendly" companies in 2006 amidst the Darfur genocide and from cluster munitions and depleted uranium weapons in 2009, during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. However, calls for fossil fuel divestment were rejected in 2013 and 2016. But persistent advocacy bore fruit when UVM trustees unanimously voted for fossil fuel divestment by July 2023.

Suresh Garimella took office as the 27th president of UVM on July 1, 2019. The University saw record enrollment and a significant research funding surge to $250 million during his tenure. However, budget cuts in 2021 that led to the termination of several departments and academic programs invited criticism. 2022 saw an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education into allegations of antisemitism at the university, with a settlement reached in 2023. The University pledged to adopt new bias reporting practices but did not comply with all demands of the complainant. Although university administrators refuted the allegations, the issue emphasized the continued evolution of the institution.

UVM continues to go through its own trials and triumphs, as evidenced by a cancelled guest lecture by Palestinian
