Once upon a time, back in the day, 1910 to be exact, an idea germinated. It was an idea that led to blossoming of knowledge that we now know as Kent State University. Yakking it up and getting the ball rolling was John Edward McGilvrey, an educator passionate about public service. At first, folks called the university the “Kent State Normal School.” Normal, though? Not quite! It was anything but a run-of-the-mill institution!
The roots were pretty much humble, with only 144 students tromping about and 42 faculty members. Yet, the campus expanded by leaps and bounds, like a fertile seed billowing into a tree that extends its branches far and wide. By 1929, the university was no longer just a 'Normal School.' It had received the university status and was striding ahead like a champion!
Talk about taking the bull by the horns! The Kent State University kept adding feathers to its cap all through the 1940s and the '50s.
