It was in the year 1857, a certain bloke by the name of Charles McLaughlin, Governor of California warmly witnessed the birth of Minns' Evening Normal School in San Francisco. Quite the fancy name, isn’t it?
Now, hold onto your whether forecast, because the year of 1862 came around blowing quite a storm, the “Act to Establish the California State Normal School” is officially passed. This act was the turning point, moving the institution notch-up, from an evening school to becoming a state-run institution focusing on teacher education. From a side-role to the leading lady, if you will.
Post the tornado transformation, in 1887, the institution changed its postal address too. It waltzed right into the heart of San Jose and renamed itself to San Jose State Normal School. Sounds quite a mouthful, doesn’t it?
