Rewinding back in time to October 15, 1787, Castleton University was birthed as the Rutland County Grammar School by Vermont's general assembly. You see, this wasn't just any school. It was a beacon of education for the young lads in the region, offering instruction in academic subjects like Latin and Greek, acting as a stepping stone to college.
Now don't get confused, this venerable institution has had many names over the past. In the 19th century, it was known as Castleton Academy, then later as Castleton Academy and Female Seminary, Vermont Classical High School and Castleton Seminary. True to its spirit of adaptability, it continued adding new feathers to its academic cap.
In the year 1823, Castleton extended its branches to "solid" women's education for "young Ladies and Misses". And it was working wonders, as by the Civil War time, young girls were making up the majority of Castleton's student population.
The year 1829 etched a remarkable landmark in Castleton's journey. A magnificent three-story brick building, worth US$30,000, housed atop a small hill south of the village. Solomon Foot, the principal then and future President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate during Civil War, masterminded this expansion move.
As the rich tapestry of Castleton's history unfolds, enter the Castleton Medical College. Pumping more life into the air of education, from 1818 to 1862, it graduated a whopping 1400 students. Intriguingly, they often shared faculty members despite being separate entities.
The first female principal, Harriet Newell Haskell, lead the institution from 1862 to 1867. Not just competent, Haskell was a testament to Castleton's commitment to women's education. However, her departure left a void and the seminary went into a decline.
In 1867, the school morphed into a college when it was established as one of the three state normal schools by Vermont. The remit for these schools? Train students for teaching careers. Fast forward to 1912, Vermont stated owned the property.
Under the helm of Caroline S. Woodruff in the 1920s and 1930s, a novel wave of growth swept over the college. Making it even more homey to international students, Castleton has hosted iconic figures like Helen Keller, Robert Frost, and Norman Rockwell.
Following increased enrollment and diversification, it became the Castleton Teachers College in 1947. Then, in 1962, it joined other state-supported colleges in the Vermont State Colleges consortium and was given a new name – "Castleton State College".
The university, being a reflection of its dynamism, saw another proposed name change in 1979 to Southern Vermont State College. However, this proposal never materialized. Ultimately, on July 23, 2015, it was unanimously christened "Castleton University" by the Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees.
Expanding its services in the Rutland region, the university now houses the Castleton Polling Institute and a professional development center for educators and entrepreneurs. Additionally, in 2016, it partnered with Green Mountain Power and Efficiency Vermont to open Foley Hall, a two-floor residence for students.
The recent history adds another feather in its cap as they ventured into Bennington County in 2019. Teaming up with southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, they introduced a B.S. registered nurse program post the closure of Southern Vermont College.
