In 1857, our very own Queens University of Charlotte began its incredible journey. Initially known as the Charlotte Female Institute, it nestled itself comfortably between College and 9th streets, right in the heart of what we now call Uptown Charlotte. Fast forward to 1930. The institute tied the knot with the quaint Chicora College for Women, previously a proud entity in the world of academia situated in Columbia, South Carolina.
The merger whispered of a new era. All that Chicora College possessed - assets and all, nestled warmly in the treasury of Queens College. But Chicora wasn't completely forgotten, its legacy lived on, with Queens College pledging to preserve the records and memories of all students and alumni who had walked the halls of Chicora. And from 1930 to 1939, the collegiate institution sang the sweet name of Queens-Chicora College, a homage to the two academic institutions that had merged into one.
Leadership looked slightly different as the times rolled on for our Charlotte institution. After 17 successful years under the able leadership of Dr. Pamela Davies, the reins of the university passed on to Daniel G. Lugo. Presiding over the 21st seat of power, Lugo assumed the mantle on July 1, 2019. Davies' retirement marked the end of one era, the beginning of another, and welcomed new leadership to shepherd the institution.
In hindsight, 2020 was a year of change, and Queens was no stranger to this. The board of trustees cast an unanimous vote, marking a pivotal point in the university's history. Burwell Hall, a longstanding monument of Queens, was to bear a new name — Queens Hall. Margaret Anna Burwell, the woman behind the title, was the wife of Robert Burwell, the first head of Queens. The building had been christened in their honour in 1914. But let's not forget that the Burwells were not just academic pioneers, they were also slaveowners. As 2020 marked a new awakening, so did it for Queens, shedding the cloak of years of history and ready to move into the future.
