Eastern Washington University, better known to you as EWU, has a rich history rooted in the nurturing town of Cheney. In the year 1880, when Cheney was referred to as 'Depot Springs', the town was meticulously planned and built around the Northern Pacific Railroad. An interesting character known as Benjamin Pierce Cheney had the privilege of being a member of the board of directors of the railroad and it's because of this gentleman's prominence, we'd see quite an unusual event take place. Cheney became so endeared to the town that by October that year, the town renamed itself in honor of him.
Incredibly moved, Cheney donated $10,000 which was used to establish an academy in his name, the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy, in 1882. With an 8-acre site reserved for the academy, the heart of educational excellence was expressed in modern-day Showalter Hall. Despite being a private institution that was steadily losing students to the competing public school district, the school remained resilient.
With 1890 marking a significant turning point for Washington as it earned its statehood; under the “Enabling Act,” normal schools started springing up in the newly minted state. Among them was our beloved State Normal School at Cheney. Dedicated to grooming the country's future elementary school teachers, it witnessed its first class commence studies under the careful watch of W. W. Gillette and William J. Sutton in October of that same year.
The school's history is engaging, yet checkered with instances of despair. Twice it was ripped apart by devastating fires - in 1891 and 1912; but like a phoenix, it rose from the ashes each time, in a testament to its indomitable spirit. Sutton played a pivotal role in the reconstruction of the school after the first fire, securing $60,000 for a new building. Though adversity struck again when in 1897, after Sutton’s resignation, Governor John R. Rogers vetoed funding for the school.
However, not wanting to see their cherished institution fall, the local community rallied and provided enough funding to keep the school running. By 1899, the state stepped in and resumed funding. Further, a prominent figure named Noah D. Showalter took over as president of the school in 1911, and, just like Sutton, championed the cause of rebuilding after the second fire. Again, funding was secured despite Governor Ernest Lister's initial veto.
From 1915 onwards, the school began to expand and develop further. It saw the commissioning of more buildings like Monroe Hall, Senior Hall, Sutton Hall between 1916 and 1923, all showcasing the architectural brilliance of Julius Zittel. This period also saw the founding of the President's House for the head of the institution. Cheney Normal School subsequently rebranded as Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937, with more infrastructure development, such as the Martin Hall being commissioned.
Fast forward to 1961, the Institute evolved once more to become Eastern Washington State College, a testament to the rapid expansion witnessed post World War II. It wasn't until 1977, that the name Eastern Washington University was formalized by the Washington State Legislature. As a token of its rich history, in 1992, the heart of the EWU campus made it to the National Register of Historic Places as the Washington State Normal School at Cheney Historic District, celebrating its significant contribution to education in the state of Washington.
Today, EWU proudly stands as a beacon of growth and resilience, carrying a legacy that's over a century old. Its deep-seated history provides a perfect setting for nurturing inquiring minds out to conquer the world. And it's this past that prepares it for an even more dynamic future. Unveiling this story is a commitment to itself and its students that, it’s not just about surviving the odds, but rather about thriving despite them.
