History Washington College

Welcome to the intriguing tale of Washington College! Picture the flourishing port city of "Chester Town," known today as Chestertown. It's the late 18th century, around 1782, and a resilient institution known as Kent County Free School has been standing tall for over 200 years. This is where our captivating narrative begins, with the transformation of the Free School into Washington College.

Here's an interesting titbit - it's the only higher education institution in the US that got its name endorsed by none other than George Washington! Oh yes, you heard right, folks. Not only did he graciously give his consent for his name to be used, but he generously pledged 50 guineas to get the institution off the ground. Mr. Washington had great hopes for the college he wished to be of "lasting and extensive usefulness".

Hold your breath, because it gets more exciting. George Washington liked the college so much that he served on its Board of Visitors and Governors — his sole affiliation with any institution of higher learning. How's that for exclusivity! And the icing on the cake? Our first president was the Reverend William Smith, a man of letters renowned in colonial matters and church affairs.

The Washington College board wasn't short of high-profile dignitaries either. Among them were esteemed figures like U.S. Senator John Henry, Congressman Joshua Seney, and William Paca, the then Governor of Maryland. What's more, the Maryland legislature bestowed its first college charter on Washington College in May 1782!

Fast forward a year to May 14, 1783, and the college celebrated its first commencement. President Smith once had a vision - he saw Washington College as an integral part of the envisioned "University of Maryland", with St. John's College as its counterpart on the Western Shore. But alas, due to the Maryland General Assembly's hesitance to fund it, this vision never fully materialized.

Wait, there's more! When General Washington was elected the first President of the United States, he retired from his board duties but was presented with the honorary degree of doctor of laws back home in June 1789. What's quite surprising though, Washington College has hosted five U.S. presidents since Washington's days—Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and George H. W. Bush - quite a star-studded list, wouldn't you agree?

Now let's take you back in time again, to May 1783 when the cornerstone of the original college building was laid. The building finally opened its doors in 1788 after selling land and conducting a lottery to fund the project. Sadly, the hall was destroyed by a basement fire in 1827, but Middle Hall, the oldest standing building was erected in 1844 on the original site, a testament to the resilience of the institution. By 1860, Middle Hall was joined by East and West Halls. This trio holds the honor of being listed on the Maryland Register of Historic Places.

So that, dear readers, is the fascinating story of Washington College, an institution founded on a rich and unique history. A story of resilience, grand visions, and illustrious guests, all woven into the fabric of an institution that continues to make history today. Get ready to become a part of this continual chronicle. Who knows, you might very well be the next charismatic character in the enduring saga of Washington College!
