History University of Illinois

Beginning our fantastic tale in the year 1867, get this—there wasn't a single building on the wide, open space of the University of Illinois. Who would have thought? But don't fret, my friends, for that grassy canvas soon saw rapid growth, ultimately blooming into the robust institution we know today. Initially, guess how many students there were. Just 77! Nothing when compared to the 50,000+ students now calling this university their academic home.

You see, the challenge at first wasn't to fit every student in, but to get the university off the ground! There was John Milton Gregory, a guy with an ambitious vision for an educational institution where even practical subjects like agriculture and mechanics would be taken seriously. Bold move, Mr. Gregory, but one that has aged like fine wine.

Now, fast-forward to 1885 and enter the women! Our lady friends fought their right to a good education and won. "Who run the world? Girls!". Even more interesting, there was this incredible woman called Mary E. L. Creswell. She smashed those glass ceilings, big time, not only being the first woman to graduate, but also to bag a master’s degree. Talk about "girl power"!

In 1894, up sprouted the iconic University bell tower, but get this—it initially came without any bells! Gave new meaning to the term 'silent as a church mouse,' didn't it? The melodious chimes that now ring through the campus didn't come to be until much later, in 1920, to be precise.

Bridging the way from the 19th to the 20th century was, drumroll please...electricity! Here's where the plot thickens. It's 1896, and Arthur William Palmer, whom we will call the 'lightbringer,' establishes the first electrical engineering laboratory. Talk about being a beacon of progress, eh?

Sailing through the 1900s saw many fascinating firsts like, catch this, Gerty Cori, a former U of I student, in 1947 became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in medicine. All hail, Gerty! You know what they say, "Behind every successful woman is herself." They don't? Well, they should!

Jumping into the 21st century, U of I in 2003 secured its reputation as a "techno whiz kid" by becoming the first university to own and operate a petascale supercomputer. So now we aren't just farming ideas, we are computing them at mega speed!

Close to 150 years since it started, the University of Illinois has continued to shape minds, make history, and most importantly, make sure everyone falls in love. Wait what! Yeah, apparently U of I is one of the best places to find one’s soulmate. How's that for some spicy university trivia?

So there you have it, folks. A wild ride down the memory lane of the good ol’ University of Illinois. While the past has been, how do I put it?—quite 'electrifying'—the best part is the future can only get brighter. Well, unless they forget to pay the electric bills. Just kidding! Its future's as bright as the 'lightbringer' Arthur himself. After all, it's not just about hitting the books, but also about making your own mark, right? Right!
