Elms College started as a vision in 1897; a joint endeavor brought to life by The Sisters of St. Joseph and the Diocese of Springfield. Their dream? A preparatory academy exclusively for girls in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Aptly named the Academy of Our Lady of the Elms, the institution was a beacon of hope, aiming to inspire the females of the era with education.
But the tapestry of Elms College's history gets even richer. Two years on, in 1899, two prestigious figures, Rev. John McCoy and Bishop Thomas Beaven of the Springfield diocese, played a significant role in shaping the course of the institution. Recognizing its potential, they purchased a property in Chicopee. This acquisition marked the evolution of the academy into St. Joseph's Normal College.
Come 1927, a significant change happened. The Sisters of Saint Joseph, the very ones who co-founded the school, sought a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This transformed the school into a women's liberal arts college. But it also brought in a specialization, providing the students with an education-centric curriculum. A year later, in 1928, the college got a new name - the College of Our Lady of the Elms, with Rev. Thomas Michael O'Leary - an inspiring name in academia, as its first president.
Over the years, the Sisters of St. Joseph, in tandem with the Springfield diocesan clergy, made sure the curriculum remained forward-thinking and comprehensive. Owing to their efforts, the curriculum expanded through the 1940s and 1950s, launching an evening program in 1953.
However, a turning point for Elms College happened as the 1960s and 1970s unfolded. The college branched out into undergraduate programs such as nursing, business management, communication sciences, and disorders. This change truly marked the adaptability of the college, as it aimed to meet the needs of the local community.
The late 1980s were an equally exciting time. Various new additions were brought in by the college including Weekend College, paralegal studies and legal studies, and even a Master of Arts degree program in teaching. Each of these new endeavors helped enhance the academic portfolio of the college.
The era of exclusivity came to an end in 1997. A historic decision by the Elms College board of trustees led the college to open its doors to men. In an overwhelming vote of 23–5 on October 7, 1997, they decided to start admitting male students from the 1998–1999 school year onwards. This decision marked a significant shift in the college's history, making it more inclusive and broadening its influence.
