An assembly of luminaries from institutions like Bard College, Goddard College, and Chicago Teachers North forged intriguing partnerships, culminating in the birth of the "Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education," later known simply as the Union Institute.
An inspiration derived from the English open education movement played a crucial role in building this groundwork of progressive education. The Union Institute was conceived with a relentless focus on the social relevance and interdisciplinary of research. Embracing the British tutorial system, in 1970, it welcomed its first doctoral students, guided by Samuel Baskin, a psychologist and educational reformer.
An interesting fact about this institution is its association with the infamous anthropologist and author, Margaret Mead, one of the institute's first professors.
