Kickstarting its educational journey as the Claremont Men's College in the balmy September of 1946, the institution sprouted with a mere class of 86 students and a faculty team of seven. Rooted in the aftermath of the horrific World War II, it offered veterans and servicemen learning opportunities caters to the G.I. Bill. In fact, this was the third of such educational havens to spring up in Claremont, shadowing Pomona and Scripps College. Born with the lofty mission to instill and cultivate leadership traits in its students, Claremont Men’s College eagerly plunged into shaping futures in vital domains like government, economics, and international affairs. Its motto resonates with its spirit of commerce and prosperity, proclaiming "Crescit cum commercio civitas", or "Civilization prospers with commerce".
Mirroring the sweeping wave of coeducation clutched by prestigious institutions like Yale, Williams, Amherst, and Dartmouth, Claremont Men's College began addressing the compelling idea of admitting women in the 1970s. Taking heed of the needs of its students, and thanks to the forceful backing from the Associated Students of Claremont's Men College, the trustees convoked, yielding to decide on admitting women in a sweeping two-thirds decision. Fast forward to 1976 - the first sparks of feminine genius were ignited in the freshman class of the newly coeducated Claremont Men's College. Remembering these pioneering steps, our story turns to Jack Stark, the college's president during this vital transition, who cited the admission of women as a milestone event the college was fortunate to witness.
Branding the first women to step into its classrooms as "Pioneers"; these women emerged from the institute bearing qualifications emblazoned with the "Claremont's Mens College" nomenclature. It wasn't until the dawn of 1981, the college chose to rename itself Claremont McKenna College after Donald McKenna - a founding trustee and esteemed fixture of the college's history.
The yesteryears of the college weren't without turbulence. Amidst the routine academic life, November 1989 saw an unexpected event where a student's father had a stripper performing in the college's dining hall. This sparked an uproar among students, but then-president Jack Stark chose to steer clear from commenting on the issue. Fast forward to September 27, 2007, the college found itself on the receiving end of a hefty $200 million donation from alumnus Robert Addison Day. While this gift promised to catalyze the Robert Day Scholars Program and a master's program in finance, some had reservations. Worries over the donation warping the college into a trade school led to a signed letter of concern by literature professors towards CMC's then-president, Pamela Gann.
Blemishes soon tainted CMC's reputation when in January 2012, it was revealed by President Gann that a "high-ranking admissions official," soon identified as former dean of admissions, Richard C. Vos, had been deceptively inflating SAT scores reported to the U.S. News & World Report. The scandal drew media attention, with Forbes even choosing to leave CMC out of its annual rankings in 2013.
But relentless in their pursuit of equality, the students once again rose in November 2015, debating the lack of institutional resources for marginalized students. This spiralled into the dean's resignation following an email implying marginalization and appropriative Halloween costumes that students claimed as culturally insensitive. This high-tension atmosphere echoed the simultaneous protests at the University of Missouri.
In April 2017, a contingent of roughly 300 student protesters, including allies from fellow Claremont Colleges, attempted to shut down a speech by conservative pundit Heather Mac Donald at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. As the crowds swelled outside, the college livestreamed the talk, and on-campus discipline saw suspensions for its students.
Today, in 2021, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education places CMC with high regards as No. 1 in all colleges in the United States for championing free speech. From humble beginnings to a legacy of leadership, this has been a quick retrospect of Claremont McKenna College, where civilizations indeed prosper with commerce!
