Once upon a time in 1909, a plan developed in the heart of Claremont, now known as RSU. Originally, it started out as the Eastern University Preparatory School. The burgeoning students took their first steps in acquiring knowledge in the historic Claremont Building, while the renowned 'Preparatory Hall' was still under construction.
The institution, however, had to turn off its learning lamp for a while, closing down in 1917. Yet, the spirit of the institution was far from defeated. Resurrection came in the form of the Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA) in 1919. This institution served a significant purpose - to educate and train the soldiers of America, who would become pivotal in shaping the country's history.
Fast forward to 1923 when OMA evolved into a six-year program, infusing the roots of both high school and junior college education. Its cornerstones were recognized with an Army ROTC Honor School rating in 1932, and in 1950, its junior college division gained full accreditation.
As history unfolded, OMA created over 2,500 military leaders, who defended the nation's honor in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Unfortunately, more than 100 valiant OMA alumni made the supreme sacrifice during these wars, forever marking OMA's significant contribution.
Then came the 1960s, a period of turbulence that saw OMA's enrollment decline, largely due to the sentiments around the Vietnam War. The Oklahoma Legislature, recognizing the changing tides, brought in a wave of transformation in 1971 by replacing OMA with Claremore Junior College, an institution proactive in granting two-year associate degrees to the public.
A decade later, in 1982, this college morphed into Rogers State College. Named after Rogers County, it reflected the community's honor for Clement Vann Rogers, the illustrious Oklahoman, who was the county's namesake.
The creative rebirth didn't stop there. In 1996, Rogers State College joined forces with the University Center at Tulsa – an extension center run by the likes of the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. This led to a new chapter - Rogers State University (RSU).
However, this union lasted for only two years, leaving RSU with a Claremore campus and the ambition to become a four-year, bachelor's-degree-granting university. After gaining the necessary permissions, RSU evolved into a public four-year, residential university in 2000.
The journey didn't end there. On August 16, 2006, a congratulatory moment arrived when RSU's Stratton Taylor Library was named a Federal depository library – a marked honor being the 20th in Oklahoma. RSU's centenary in 2009 was celebrated with fervor marked by special events and the dedication of the Centennial Center.
Later, in 2005, RSU expanded its footprint to Bartlesville, acquiring a nine-story building, thus, becoming a crucial part of downtown Bartlesville's redevelopment. The university grew even more in 2014 when it opened a campus at the MidAmerica Industrial Park, a whopping 83-acre site gift from the Oklahoma Ordnance Works Authority, marking the largest gift in RSU's history.
