History Case Western Reserve University

As history goes, the inception of Western Reserve College traces back to 1826 in the town of Hudson, Ohio. The distinction of being the first college in northern Ohio was attributed to this institution, which came to be known fondly as 'Reserve.' The tag of 'Yale of the West' was affixed to it due to the uncanny resemblance it bore to the architectural grandeur of Yale's campus. The credo 'Lux et Veritas', which translates to 'Light and Truth', was shared by both these institutes.

Unlike Yale, Reserve dabbed its students with a tinge of practicality by mandating manual labor as a part of their curriculum. The labor component was perceived to be a measure of enhancing their psychological wellbeing. At the time of its inception, the decision to situate the college at Hudson was significantly influenced by the substantial financial aid, the town was willing to contribute towards its construction.

Hudson, a serene town nestled 30 miles southeast of Cleveland, emerged as a robust anti-slavery nucleus right from its onset. Its founder, David Hudson, and Owen Brown, a founding trustee and widely recognized abolitionist, were instrumental in the college's relocation. As for the notorious abolitionist John Brown - whose 1859 audacious raid on Harpers Ferry is well-etched in history books - he was brought up in Hudson and was the offspring of co-founder Owen Brown. The town of Hudson gained a prominent slot in the abolitionist timeline, becoming a major stop on the Underground Railroad.

The year of 1831 saw the topic of slavery abolition reigning the campus discussions at Western Reserve College. An embodiment of resistance, the college's chaplain and Bible professor, Beriah Green, delivered a series of four sermons on the issue and eventually resigned. Shortly thereafter, President Charles Backus Storrs took a health leave and sadly passed away soon. Amidst this turmoil, one of the remaining professors, Elizur Wright, took over the reins of the American Anti-Slavery Society.

On the brighter side, Western Reserve College made a considerable stride when in 1832, it became the first college west of the Appalachian Mountains to admit an African-American student named John Sykes Fayette. He was subsequently graduated in 1836, marking another feather in Reserve's cap. The graduation ceremony of 1854 was attended by Frederick Douglass, who graced the occasion with his commencement speech.

Adding to its long list of firsts, the Medical School of Western Reserve College became the second medical school in the United States to confer a medical degree to a woman, Nancy Talbot Clark, in 1852. This laudable precedent was soon followed by five more women, including Emily Blackwell and Marie Zakrzewska, within the next four years. This feat earned Western Reserve College the reputation of graduating six of the first eight female physicians in the United States.

As Ohio realized its potential and Cleveland surged as the demographic and commercial epicenter of the state, the need for an esteemed higher education institution surfaced. Consequently, bolstered by Amasa Stone's funding, Western Reserve College relocated to Cleveland in 1882 and underwent a name change to become the Adelbert College of Western Reserve University - 'Adelbert' being the name of Mr. Stone's son.

Around the same period, Leonard Case Jr. embarked on his vision of establishing the Case School of Applied Science by covertly donating precious real estate pieces of Cleveland to a trust. Consequently, on March 29, 1880, the documents were filed to officiate the foundation of the Case School of Applied Science.

The early 20th century saw the illustrious physicist Albert Einstein visiting the Case campus during his inaugural trip to the United States in 1921. He paid his tributes to the significant physics research underway at the campus and discussed his own work with physics professor Dayton Miller.

With time, the Case School of Applied Science expanded its academic array and transformed into the Case Institute of Technology in 1947, reflecting the institution's advancement. The merger in 1967 between the Case Institute of Technology, noted for its emphasis on science and engineering, and the Western Reserve University, known for its professional programs and liberal arts, gave birth to the current-day institution—Case Western Reserve University.

The university has stood as a testament to academic excellence and has spearheaded a flurry of technological and medical advancements. By raising a whopping $1.82 billion in its "Forward Thinking" campaign, the university has reiterated its commitment towards crafting a future empowered by knowledge. This enduring legacy of Case Western Reserve University continues to push boundaries and write new chapters of academic brilliance.
