History Hamilton College

Rewinding back to 1793, the roots of Hamilton College emerged, born from the vision of Rev. Samuel Kirkland. As a venture embraced by Alexander Hamilton himself, the Hamilton-Oneida Academy blossomed serving white and Oneida boys alike. Now imagine, an educational institution nested near the Oneida Nation's heartland, shimmering under the sun in its three-story tall glory.

However, not all was rosy as the Oneida boys mostly dropped out after the first year. Reasons you ask? Imagine yourself in their shoes, grappling with the English language and struggling with a lack of financial resources.

Flash forward to 1805, the Academy, showing resilience in the face of adversity, sought a charter from the New York Board of Regents. In a delightful turn of events, it was granted in 1812, with the Academy now needing to gather an endowment worth $50,000. That might not sound like much now, but back then, it was as if having an almost million-dollar jackpot in your back pocket.

The Academy now bore the name of Hamilton College. Sporting a fresh curriculum and a hefty endowment of $100,000, it stepped into the world as the third-oldest college in New York State. All the while, support flowed from the State Legislature, with $3,000 per year until 1850 adding to the College treasure.

Hamilton College started setting ambitious admission standards by 1813, underlining the importance of Latin language proficiency and arithmetic skills. It kept growing and learning, and by 1836, it housed 115 students assisted by four professors and a President.

Over the decades, the 20th Century saw Hamilton College moving further from its initial religious foundations. This step was due to the guidance of President M. Woolsey Stryker, who wished for a more secular approach.

Changes never ceased at Hamilton College; in the late 20th Century, it founded Kirkland College, a platform for women's education. It wasn't an entirely smooth journey as Kirkland was seen as less rigorous than Hamilton, brewing a tale of mixed emotions, discussions, and longstanding resentments.

Now, let's turn to the present-day Hamilton College campus layout. It's like a book with two contrasting yet interesting parts: the "light side" or north side, representing the Hamilton platform, and the "dark side" or south side, standing for Kirkland.

Did you know since 1995, rules have come into place requiring students of Hamilton College to live and eat on campus? And as the ties with fraternities loosened, college life saw a shift less focused on drinking and more on being politically progressive.

Alongside evolution, scandals were not amiss. In 2002, President Eugene Tobin resigned amidst controversy over improper attribution in his speeches. Meanwhile, Professor Robert L. Paquette disagreed with student choices, bringing a buzz about campus.

Hamilton College continues to evolve over time, upholding its rich history and numerous transformations. So, as you reflect on this tale, remember the commitment to learning and inclusivity that has driven Hamilton College from its foundations to the present day.
