Can you fathom embarking on a journey back to 1880? Imagine the serene town of Clinton, South Carolina where Reverend William Plumer Jacobs fueled by his intense passion for education, established the Presbyterian College. His journey started way back in 1864, when he served as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and simultaneously founded the Thornwell Orphanage. With a clear vision of providing a "tree of knowledge", he set up what was initially known as Clinton College.
Reverend Jacobs' dream wasn't just to equip young minds with education but to inspire lives of service towards the church and society. And so, he started this seed of knowledge on its path with a small inaugural class of students, including three courageous women who graduated in 1883. The goal was simple yet profound - to enable students to be noble "epistles to Christ's honor and glory".
As the clock ticked and the world moved forward, so did the college. By 1917, the year of Jacob's death, the legacy he had built saw a magnificent growth. From an idea, it had transformed into a college boasting six grand buildings. In particular, the Neville Hall - built in the year 1907 - stood tall symbolizing the journey traversed, becoming the most recognized structure of the college.
With steady progress and a precipitous increase in its wealth and stature, the college attracted the attention of president Davison McDowell Douglas. His tenure from 1911 to 1926 witnessed unprecedented growth. From a tripling of the college's faculty and student body to constructing four new state-of-the-art buildings, the campus was unrecognizable. The asset value skyrocketed from $150,000 to a whopping $1 million!
However, like every institution, the Presbyterian College too experienced its share of turbulence. It endured the Great Depression and the ravages of the Second World War, emerging stronger. It's important to understand that growth isn't always linear, and this college is a true testament to endurance and resilience.
As the second half of the 20th century dawned, the college continued to expand, but with a twist! It made a decisive leap to become fully coeducational in 1965. And in doing so, it gracefully dropped its earlier motto "Where Men are Made", since it was no longer just a haven for male students.
Just when you thought this couldn't get more inspiring, the college extended its arms wider and with a welcoming heart, it began admitting African-American students in 1969. This step transformed the college from being just an institution of learning to a symbol of inclusivity, progress, and equality.
So, that's the inspiring tale of the Presbyterian College, a tale of grit, commitment, and vision! What started as the dream of one man evolved into a beacon of hope and a symbol of progression for generations. An educational icon standing tall in Clinton, South Carolina, ready to welcome more dreamers and creators from all walks of life!
