In a humble corner of Pennsylvania, back in 1867, the seeds of what is now known as Ursinus College were planted. Can you picture the passionate members of the German Reformed Church laying the foundation with a dream to "liberally educate young men under the benign influence of Christianity?" They had a mission: To create an alternative to the seminary at Mercersburg, which they believed had begun straying from the Reformed faith.
By 1869, their vision was solidifying, as Ursinus College received its official charter from the Legislature of Pennsylvania. Doesn't it have that special touch, the college starting on the grounds of two renowned institutes, Todd's School and the adjacent Freeland Seminary? It was the year when Dr. John Bomberger placed the first brick of Ursinus' legacy as its first president, up until his departure in 1890. His grand idea was to name the college after Zacharias Ursinus, a 16th-century German theologian and key figure in the Protestant Reformation.
Fast forward to 1870 where the first lessons commenced and not long after, witness the foundation of the Zwinglian Literary Society. Those were the days when the annual reunions of this society and its rival, Schaff, marked the highlight of the student year.
Change is a constant, right? So, 1881 saw a milestone for Ursinus- the opening of doors to women. This was a direct effect of the closure of the Pennsylvania Female College in the previous year. To make the ladies feel right at home, The Olevian, a separate literary society for women was formed in 1885.
By 1896, the town of Freeland had reshaped itself as the Borough of Collegeville. While you may assume it was named so for Ursinus, it was actually due to the Pennsylvania Female College. Funny how times change, for now, the "college" in Collegeville is synonymous with Ursinus!
Fun fact from history: In 1921, the first aerial picture of Ursinus was clicked by future college president D. L. Helfferich and got published in the 1921 Ruby. Speaking of Ruby, it's the name of Ursinus' yearbook, first published in 1897 as a tribute to Professor Samuel Vernon Ruby.
The following year, World War II triggered a significant decline in Ursinus' male enrollment - from 535 to a mere 350 students. However, Ursinus made commendable efforts to attract military students, even acquiring a Naval V-12 unit.
Fast forward to 2006, and The Ursinus College caught New York Times' attention and was featured in their popular guidebook, Colleges That Change Lives. Continuing the growth trajectory, by 2011, Ursinus College earned a coveted spot in the Top Ten Up and Coming Colleges by U.S. News & World Report.
Looking back, there have been ups and downs, changes, and advances. But through it all, the pillars of Ursinus College stood tall. Now in its 155th year, Ursinus is where it is today because of visionaries who believed in the power of liberal education.
