When the clock struck the hour on January 3rd, 1904, over 220 eager young minds gathered for the inaugural day of Lindsey Wilson College. However, the story began much before that. Initiated in 1903 by the Louisville Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, the establishment of this institution aimed to nurture intellectual minds.
Here’s a bit about Lindsey Wilson for you. The college was named to commemorate Lindsey Wilson - the late nephew and stepson of Catherine Wilson from Lebanon, Kentucky. The original institution was a training school designed to shepherd students’ potential, preparing them for future coursework at Vanderbilt University. Besides, it played a key role in shaping the future educators of the nation.
The budding relationship with Vanderbilt University ended in 1914. The college found its new wings in 1923 when it transformed into Lindsey Wilson Junior College. It was at this point that the institution embraced a two-year liberal arts program, stepping into a broader spectrum of academics.
The year 1951 marked a significant milestone when Lindsey Wilson Junior College achieved accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Despite moving ahead in terms of program offerings, it retained the training school on its campus until 1979.
1985 was another landmark year. The decision to pivot the college into a four-year liberal arts institution was made at the April meeting of the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees. The masterstroke gave birth to the institution we now know as Lindsey Wilson College – offering a bachelor's degree for the intellectually hungry minds.

Let's go back a bit. During homecoming 1991, the college's main campus received the honor to be christened the "A.P. White Campus" by college trustees. This was in tribute to the college's second president, who guided the school through the hard times of the Great Depression.
Among the first bricks laid down on campus were the L.R. McDonald Administration Building and Phillip's Hall. The funding, in part, was through Catherine Wilson's estate gift. There’s also visual proof of the institution's evolution at the Katie Murrell Library located in the Holloway Building.
A dramatic transformation blew across the Lindsey Wilson’s A.P. White Campus in the 2000s. Over $100 million fueled new capital projects, catapulting the campus into the next league. The biggest single gift in the college’s history funded the construction of the Jim and Helen Lee Fugitte Science Center. Continuing the trend, the college introduced various sports facilities and residences between 2001 to 2014, refining the campus experience for students.
Notable LWC administrators include the late Methodist clergyman and former Kentucky State Sen. Doug Moseley. He also graciously donated his personal library to the college's Clark Reading Room. The historian Betty Jane Gorin-Smith, before retiring from education, taught occasional courses at Lindsey Wilson.
