Perched in Bexley, a picturesque suburb of Columbus, Ohio, rests an educational institution renowned for its deep-rooted history and varied services – Capital University. Dating back to 1830, it boasts a laudable legacy as one of the oldest academic centers in the heart of Ohio. This prestigious university is not only recognized for its age-old foundations but also as one of the most expansive Evangelical Lutheran universities nationwide.
Diving deeper into the offerings of Capital University, it features an array of comprehensive courses designed to cater to the diverse academic interests of its students. The faculty, the backbone of the University, is comprised of seasoned educators and researchers who are at the forefront of their respective fields. They work relentlessly to foster a stimulating and supportive learning environment for every student.
Talking about the student group, Capital University houses a rich mix of domestic and foreign students, making it a vibrant and inclusive community. The University acknowledges the unique challenges faced by these students and introduces initiatives to make their transition smooth and comfortable.

Picture this: You're taken back in time to the 1830s. The date is June 3rd, 1830. In Canton, Ohio, the Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio is born. Yes, you heard it right! This institution is the predecessor of our beloved Capital University! Interestingly, this happened a whole 40 years earlier than the birth of Ohio State University, confirming Capital University’s title as the oldest in Central Ohio.
Two years later, imagine the Institution making a move to downtown Columbus. Fast forward to March 2nd, 1850, and you would witness something groundbreaking: the non-seminary part of the school attains a new identity as Capital University, while the seminary transforms into the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary, often abbreviated simply as ELTS.
What comes next is a grand development. A unification of multiple denominations over the next few decades eventually gives birth to the American Lutheran Church (ALC). However, the ALC remains only for about 30 years until, in 1960, it merges again with other entities. This union results in another American Lutheran Church. Its journey concludes in 1988 when the current Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) assumes its place, making Chicago, Illinois, its home base.
Now let’s move on to the 20th-century architectural beauty of the Capital University campus. Nestled on the outskirts of the state capital, in the green suburbs of Bexley, the campus offers a grand view. It exudes the brilliance of Lutheran-influenced education, marked by values of free inquiry, critical thinking, and leadership. Its motto -- "Ask. Think. Lead" – echoes these values, emphasizing its dedication to its mission. In 1982, a recognition of its architectural glory earns it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places as the "Capital University Historic District".
Advancing into the 21st century, the Capital University carries out some exciting changes. In 2004, it earns permission to close Mound Street between College Avenue and Pleasant Ridge Avenue from the city of Bexley. Then in 2006, a pedestrian mall graces the closed part of Mound Street. As you walk along, you’d find benches to rest, improved lighting for evening strolls, and welcoming landscaping. This project estimated at 2.5 million dollars, successfully unifies the northern and southern parts of the campus.
Meanwhile, the leadership goes through some shifts. Denvy A. Bowman, the 15th president, retires in 2016 after a 10-year tenure. Elizabeth L. Paul steps in next as the 16th president and the first woman to do so. However, a no-confidence vote in 2020 sees her resignation. David Kaufman, originally an interim president, accepts the authority as the 17th president on July 25, 2021.
Let's circle back to ELTS, now independent since 1959. In 1978, it merges with the Hamma Divinity School of nearby Wittenberg University and is reborn on the Bexley campus as Trinity Lutheran Seminary. In the fall of 2016, Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary reveal plans to reunite after 58 long years.
Finally, a change in the university’s mascot. On July 13, 2020, a decision to retire the Crusader nickname and "Cappy" mascot unravels, culminating a 15-month-long study. "Capital Comets", introduced on September 30, 2021, becomes the new mascot, embodying the university’s constant evolution and commitment to its mission.
