Picture this - It's the year 1879, and a small group of visionary women in Columbus have just set the first stone of what is to become a prestigious institution of art and design - The Columbus Art School. This initiative was fuelled by the Columbus Art Association, formed a year earlier, their vision crystal clear; Columbus needed an art school. On January 6, 1879, the first class was held on the top floor of the Sessions Building. With only three students and one teacher, against the odds, by year's end, the number had grown to a commendable 118 students. Francis Sessions, an art-savvy financier and one of the first trustees, had graciously donated the floor for use.
As the student body grew, so did the courses offered. From drawing, watercolor, oil painting to clay modeling, china painting, and mechanical drawing, the school was becoming a comprehensive art institution. The late 19th century dictated modesty, which resulted in covered models for sculpture and figurative drawing classes. A move to the Tuller Building in 1885 pointed to the school's significant growth.
The game-changer came when Francis Sessions left his residence and a generous sum in his will for creation of a more refined gallery and continuation of the school. This lead to several relocations until 1914, when they settled next to the Sessions House in the Monypeny Mansion. By 1923, it was evident that the Columbus Art Association and the gallery needed some order, hence a merger into one board. The art association dissolved, and the gallery trustees set up a school committee board.
In the fall of 1929, Ralph Beaton, a trustee, saw an opportunity and contributed a whopping $30,000 towards the construction of the Columbus Art School's first designated building. By 1930, Beaton Hall was ready for occupation, marking the end of the Sessions House and Monypeny Mansion era. World War II had its toll on the day school operations in 1941-45, but on the flip side, evening school services expanded.
Adding another feather to the institution's cap, Joseph Canzani, who started teaching in 1948, took on the role of Dean. Despite the declining student numbers in the day school (only 13 by 1950), Canzani curated introductory courses in drawing, color theory, and design principles. Under his leadership, in 1959, the school was rechristened the Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD).
By the 1960s, CCAD had expanded to 850 full-time students. The students' pressure for degree granting led to accreditation by the Ohio Board of Regents in 1969. In 1976, CCAD nailed another milestone by earning accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art. Canzani morphed from Dean to first President of CCAD in June 1979.
The year 1981 saw CCAD shake off the Columbus Museum of Art's control after 58 years. After keenly warding off an approach for a merger with Franklin University, the school achieved full independence by 1982. The 1985 erection of the Schottenstein Residence Hall was a statement - CCAD was growing. Soon a patchwork of old houses were converted into classrooms and offices.
Canzani retired in 1995, leaving a legacy of the Canzani Center (completed in 1991), an auditorium, a sprawling 15,000 square foot gallery, and the CCAD Packard Library. Under the reign of Dennison W. Griffith, the college's president since 1998, CCAD doubled its size and introduced a new curriculum split into two schools: the School of Design Arts and the School for Studio Arts. The baton was handed to industrial designer and branding expert Tom White on June 24, 2014.
Fast forward to December 2015, CCAD's board of trustees ushered in a new era by appointing Dr. Melanie Corn as the school's new president, marking the first time in its 140-year history a woman held the post. Today CCAD stands as a testimony to the determination and resilience of a handful of art-loving individuals that sparked off a journey of quality art education in Columbus.
