Circa 1866, and it's a bright day in the small town of Hanover, New Hampshire. It all starts with a man named Benjamin Thompson. He isn't a educational bigwig, no sirree! Just a humble farmer with a big dream. A dream where knowledge is like the open sky, available to one and all. He kick-starts this dream by bequeathing his farm and savings to create an educational institution. Little did this humble farmer know that his dream would one day morph into the renowned University of New Hampshire (UNH).
Fast forward to 1893, the institute of education, once a humble farm school, finds itself at its new home at Durham, packing a new name to boot – "New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts." Although it sounds cases full of syllables and might give your tongue a twister's workout, it was a definitive move that laid the bricks for the university's reputation as a center for innovation and intellectual curiosity.
As the years rolled on, the dawn of 1923 saw it sprout it's proud new name 'University of New Hampshire’. And oh, the university was just getting warmed up! It further expanded its leafy campus, adding various faculties, from liberal arts to engineering, from Life science to business and economics, making it a one-stop-shop for those seeking knowledge far and wide.
Fast forward to 1939, the blue and white colours of the UNH flooded with pride when its first international student, hailing all the way from Netherlands, set his foot into the progressive institution.
Making steady strides, the late 60's saw UNH playing a crucial part in supporting the civil rights and anti-war movements. Offering a safe haven to voices, diverse and colorful, UNH said "Namaste!" to its first-ever Indian student in 1969. It's safe to say that things were only looking up from this point.
Like any educational institution worth its salt, UNH faced its fair share of ups and downs. But through thick, thin and everything in between, UNH's dedication to its students and relentless pursuit of academic excellence remained unwavered.
Today, with a sprawling campus of over 2,600 acres and housing more than 15,000 students from all corners of the world, UNH proudly stands as a beacon of knowledge and innovation. It’s been quite the rollercoaster ride from its humble beginnings on a farmhouse to becoming a globally-renowned institution. Howzat for a transformation!
The essence of UNH's story is one of resilience, vision, and most importantly, a dedication to education that transcends borders. It's an exhilarating tale where the journey was equally, if not more, joyous than the destination.
