Founded in the vibrant year of 1954, Coastal Carolina University embarked on its journey as Coastal Carolina Junior College. Behind this establishment was a zealous group called the Coastal Educational Foundation. Comprising of passionate citizens, this group ardently desired to set up a higher education institution in the country, and thus, the first chapter of the university’s history was written.
The birth of this institution was no small feat. Initially, the college operated as an extension of the more prominent College of Charleston. Picture the scene- classrooms bustling at night within the friendly confines of Conway High School, with lessons animatedly delivered by part-time faculties. However, by 1958, the college sought independence from its Charleston peer.
Now an independent entity, the period post-1958 brought about some crucial changes. Coastal Africa Junior College found a benefactor in Horry County. Meanwhile, the formation of the Horry County Educational Commission in 1959 signaled another key development - supervision of the college's finances. As fate would have it, just a year later, the commission signed a contract, and the college became the Coastal Carolina Regional Campus of the University of South Carolina.
This contract was not agreed upon in a conventional setting - instead of a boardroom, the agreement was inked at a spot quaintly named the Chat ‘n’ Chew, a popular eatery nestled in Turbeville. In 1960, a plot of land lying between U.S. 501 and S.C. 544, owned by the Burroughs Timber Company and International Paper, was chosen as the campus site. Over the years, buildings sprouted, with the first one, the Edward M Singleton Building, opening its doors in 1963.
The decade that followed was pivotal in the college's development, as in 1973 and in 1974, a third and a fourth year was added, respectively. The first on-campus residence, endearingly referred to as 'The Woods,' welcomed its inhabitants in 1987. By 1991, the student count had blossomed to over 4,000, prompting the Coastal Educational Foundation and Horry County Educational Commission to pursue the school's independent status.
Their efforts bore fruit barely a year later when the same college was granted independent status by the USC system's board of trustees. The last chancellor of Coastal Carolina College, Ronald R. Ingle, had the honor of taking the helm as the first president of the newly christened Coastal Carolina University on 1st July 1993.
Fast-forward to 2003, where more than 8,000 spectators cheered the university's inaugural football game. Just a year later, as the institution celebrated its golden jubilee, the student population swelled to 7,000. The first phase of the centrally located University Place housing complex was inaugurated around the same time.
The subsequent decade witnessed an infrastructural transformation owing to a 1-cent sales tax levied on education-related construction. This period also marked the introduction of the university's first doctoral program – Coastal and Marine Science Systems Science. By 2017, Coastal Carolina's enrolment grew to an impressive 10,600 students, and the crowning glory was the university's baseball team clinching the College World Series.
Circa October 2020, Michael T. Benson was announced as the successor of long-serving president David A. DeCenzo. Michael stepped into his role on 1st January 2021, ready to write the next chapter of the Coastal Carolina University's illustrious journey. Today, every Indian parent and high school student dreams of studying amongst the hallowed portals of this remarkable institution.
