In the heart of Altus, Arkansas in 1876, an academic venture blossomed. The Central Institute, guided by the vision of Rev. Isham L. Burrow, began as a primary school. This early establishment marked the birth of an institution that would ultimately become Hendrix College.
In the course of five years, the school adopted significant transformations. In 1881, it underwent a name change to Central Collegiate Institute upon the inclusion of secondary and collegiate departments. The first class to graduate under the new structure emerged the following year. Remarkably, the three women who comprised this pioneering class were crowned as Mistresses of English Literature.
Historical changes continued as new partnerships formed. In 1884, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, embraced a relationship with the school, purchasing it collectively via three conferences. This acquisition emboldened the institution's affiliation with Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and later with The Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church.
As the end of the decade approached, recognition came to those involved in the school's foundation and development. The name Hendrix College graced the institution in 1889 as a tribute to Rev. Eugene Russell Hendrix. This faithful servant of the Methodist Church presided over the conferences that had earlier acquired the school.
With the dawning of a new century, the roots of Hendrix College dug deeper into Arkansas. Seven of the state's towns competed for the privilege of hosting the college. However, the Board of Trustees had their eyes set on Conway, making it the home of Hendrix from 1890. The appeal was such that literary societies - Harlan, Franklin, and Hypatian, began to sprout within the college premises.
The growth of Hendrix College led to some functions being phased out, with secondary education discontinued in 1925. In 1929, an intriguing plot twist saw the college merge with Arkadelphia's Henderson-Brown College into Hendrix-Henderson College. However, after just two years, the college reverted back to the Hendrix College moniker. This merger reshaped the college's identity, transforming Hendrix Bull Dogs into the Hendrix Warriors and prompting a newspaper name change.
Even with the prosperity of the college and its expansion plans, the local community couldn't bear to let it go. An impressive $150,000 was raised within Conway to retain the college in its beloved city.
