Founded in 1925, the University of Miami, which is located in the picturesque Coral Gables in Florida, stands as an eminent private research-led academic institution. While origins of this university can be traced back to George Merrick's initially unfinished Merrick Building, it took just a nearby hotel and earnest academic spirit to start the learning journey. This lent the first cheeky name—the "Cardboard College". Now sprawled over three capacious campuses, it houses various academic structures, a theatre, an arboretum and architecture centre, and even an artistically enriching Lowe Art Museum.

Steering academic excellence, the University of Miami offers a broad spectrum of study areas through 12 distinct schools and colleges. From Arts and Sciences, Business to Communication, Education and Engineering, Law to Marine, Medicine, and Music—the options here are exhaustive for both undergraduates and postgraduates, covering over 180 potential majors and programs. Its schools and colleges, such as the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science among others, have different campuses dedicated to them in Miami. Pivoting around innovative curricula, the university weaves a dynamic learning experience.

It is not just about the monumental buildings; the University of Miami is also celebrated for the richness of its student population. It's a welcoming community where diversity is not just represented but respected. International students are an integral part of this eclectic mix, contributing to the vibrant academic and cultural atmosphere. Its well-known alumni include names such as actor Sylvester Stallone and renowned director David Nutter. This may serve as an inducement for you, illuminating the limitless potential this university can help you forge.

Lastly, it's worth noting that the University of Miami acknowledges the financial challenges that international students may face. Hence, it offers a myriad of scholarships and comprehensive financial aid packages. History University of Miami

Picture this. It's 1925, and a band of spirited citizens in the heart of Miami are inspired by the potent idea of establishing a university. This group understood the power of education and were solidly driven by the vision to create a melting pot of international studies and enterprising research programs in the tropical studies and arts. There were sparks of optimism that their efforts will bear fruits, given the fact that South Florida was at the helm of a land boom. The fact that there were already three state-funded universities accommodating white male, white female, and black female students, only fuelled their ambition to ensure inclusivity, even in an era riddled with Jim Crow laws.

Then enters George E. Merrick, the founder of the Coral Gables, with a generous grant of almost $5 million (adjusted to current inflation) and a sweeping 160 acres land. April 8, 1925 saw this ambition solidify into a chartered university, yet the first strikes of a challenge were imminent. Just when 372 students enlisted to embark on their academic journey, the land boom wore off, and a devastating hurricane lashed Miami. A financial challenge had knocked on the doors of this newly established institution, one that would continue for next 15 years.

Steadfast in their mission, the university strived on more or less shoestring budget, even resorting to holding classes off-campus. Anastasia Hotel in Coral Gables became the makeshift campus, replacing the half-built Merrick building. Cardboards separated the classrooms, thus the nickname Cardboard College, though it was eventually abandoned. The university's financial crisis further worsened in 1929 leading to the resignation of William E. Walsh and other university board members. The students took it upon themselves to fund their institution, collecting donations from residents of Coral Gables.

Respite came only in 1930, when more than 60 students and several faculty members sought refuge at the University of Miami following the closure of the University of Havana due to political unrest. Though it provided some financial relief, by 1932 university had to file for bankruptcy protection.

But universities are made out of tough stuff, aren't they? And so, the University of Miami was reincorporated in 1934, and a new board of trustees was installed in place of the board of regents. The hardship would not last much longer, and during the presidency of Bowman Foster Ashe, the university expanded considerably, adding School of Law, Business, Education, Graduate School, Marine Laboratory, School of Engineering, and School of Medicine.

Under the able leadership of Jay F. W. Pearson, the University of Miami started awarding Ph.D. degrees, and its student enrollment progressed to exceed 4,000. During his tenure, the University of Miami also played a crucial role in the Cuban intelligence gathering operations against Fidel Castro's communist government from 1961 to 1968.

Following the laws of Title IX in 1972, the University of Miami organizations, including honorary societies, were opened to women's participation and inclusion. This paved the way for accepting the first woman in the nation awarded an athletic scholarship in 1973.Terry Williams Munz embarked on this historical journey of being the first woman to accept a University of Miami golf scholarship.

Under Edward T. Foote II's leadership, the university endowed an impressive sum of $465.2 million from $47.4 million in 1981. The tenure of Donna Shalala saw the University of Miami flourish further with construction of new facilities, an upgrade in academic quality, and a revolutionary fundraising campaign that raised an an unparalleled $1.37 billion.

The University's journey continued with the appointment of Julio Frenk, former dean of Harvard’s School of Public Health, as the sixth president of the university in 2015. From facing stark challenges and uncertainty to becoming one of Florida's most esteemed educational institutions, the University of Miami has indeed come a long way. What began as a dream by a group of citizens is today a beacon of academic and research excellence.
