History The State University of New York (SUNY)

So there was a day, way back in March 1948, when a bunch of people came together and birthed an idea - a concept that would ignite the torch of education in the state of New York. Named it, wait for it, "The State University of New York" – a catchy name, eh?

So, what's up with this SUNY thing? It all started when some chap named Thomas Dewey (a Governor, mind you), got the wind that education wasn't exactly a walk in the park for everyone in NY. Thus, he dreamt up SUNY, to make sure everyone got a fair chance at learning, age no bar, caste no bar, can't say about the bar of chocolate though!

But that’s not all, folks! When they started off, they planned to include 29 colleges under their umbrella, distributing education like hot samosas. By the time 1953 rolled around, they couldn't stop themselves! They added more colleges, and in the blink of an eye, number jumped up to 64 campuses. Someone has rightly said, "the more, the merrier."

And hey, guess what?! This isn't just another university, no siree! This place got some firsts under its belt. Like in ‘68, they appointed the first-ever, hold your breath, woman president of any university in the United States. And that’s not just a random fact - it's a 'woman power' moment we're talking about here, Salute!

As time trotted along, SUNY went about doing their thing, spreading quality education like butter on toast, all across the state. Fact is, these folks now have over 1.3 million students and have dished out more than 3 million degrees, in all sorts of areas. Everything from Art to Zoology, you name it!

But what’s the cherry on top, you ask? Ah! SUNY has been doing some hush-hush, top secret research too, racking up a whopping $1.7 billion in fiscal year 2019. Now that's not small beans, is it?

Never ones to rest, in 2011, they decided to march ahead with their new master plan, “Power of SUNY,” to keep themselves hip and happening in the 21st century education game. They set up the very ambitious objective of getting SUNY on the top of the chart by 2020. And boy! They must be having some ambition potion.

But hey, let’s cut the chase. Why should you, sitting thousands of miles away in India, care about SUNY? Well, just a small thing - they have over 5000 dynamic international student’s community, from more than 160 countries! Voila, feel at home already?

Alright then, to wrap it up, right from the day it bid hello to the world, SUNY has been a hot pot of diversification, inclusivity, making everyone feel like they belong. They don't just preach about it, they be about it. And with its arms wide open, it invites you to join its journey, becoming a part of the tradition that's been spreading the light of education around, since forever. So, gear up and take a leap towards SUNY - a decision you won't regret!
