History Wabash College

It all started with an establishment christened— The Wabash Teachers Seminary and Manual Labor College. Doesn't that feel like a mouthful? By 1851, it was wisely shortened to something much easier—Wabash College. Picture this, a group of Presbyterian ministers, serving as founders. Interestingly, they wanted Wabash to be independent, non-sectarian, now that's progressive thinking, right?

Now, imagine a high school, growing and evolving, finally blossoming into a full-fledged college. That's Wabash for you. Heavily inspired by the liberal arts colleges in New England, the founders resolved to morph this modest institution into a college powerhouse when the country demanded it. You ask? Yes, it was right.

One of the key figures amongst these ministers was Caleb Mills, who became not just a faculty member, but the first at Wabash College. As passionate and dedicated as they come, Mills was all about enhancing education in the Mississippi Valley area, an area still in its developmental stages. Today, he's not just remembered, but honoured as the father of the Indiana public education system.

In 1835, Elihu W. Baldwin took the reins as the first president of Wabash, and boy, he had his job cut out for him. Moving from a church in New York City, he took on the challenge, even though Wabash was facing a financial crisis. Truly brave, right? Following his death, Wabash saw a new leader in Charles White, a Dartmouth College graduate.

Say hello to Joseph F. Tuttle. He stepped in as president in 1862, holding the position for a whopping 30 years. Now, let me tell you, he was quite the expert at handling public relations and strengthening the college's relationship with Crawfordsville town, where the college is situated.

Fast forward to 2020. Scott E. Feller, a chemistry professor at Wabash since 1998, became the 17th President of the institution. It seems like a power shift, doesn't it? Well, in the world of academia, anything is possible.

The college had undergone significant changes over the years. In the early 1900s, we saw the closure of its "Preparatory School", which was a bridge program for incoming students from rural high schools not as rigorous as the college. And, name check here— WWII, the V-12 Navy College Training Program allowed offering students a path to a Navy commission. Can you see Wabash's name in there? Yes, they were among the 131 participating colleges and universities.

Beyond the '90s, we witnessed Wabash's path-breaking move. It was the first college in America to stage Tony Kushner's Angels in America back in 1996.

So, there you have it. The story of Wabash, full of challenges and milestones, shaping and defining an institution that continues to carry on the legacy of its pioneers.
