History Columbia College

Columbia College, that prestigious gem in New York, started its journey way back in 1754. Now, it's a thrilling thought isn't it, to be a part of an institute that's older than the country it sits in! King George II of England, bless his heart, signed a royal charter to bring it to life. Originally named King's College, sort of a tip of the hat to the good old king himself, it was the fifth college established in the colonies. The campus? A small, modest schoolhouse next to none other than what today folks call the Trinity Church in Manhattan.

The very first class, snuggling just eight students, kicked off under the watchful eyes of Dr. Samuel Johnson, the principal and the only faculty member. Can you imagine that? One person juggling all classes and all subjects. Talk about multi-tasking!

Now, something that'll pique your interest, our colonial college was home to an Indian student as early as in 1787. Cornplanter, a chief of the Seneca tribe, walked its hallowed halls. Quite an ambassador for us Indians, I say, marking our way centuries ago!

But things weren't always smooth sailing. Came the American Revolution, and the college had to shut shop for eight long years. However, when they reopened in 1784, they did it with a punch, renaming themselves ‘Columbia’, after Columbus. A brand-new name for a brand-new era.

And then, as they say, the rest is history. Throughout the 19th and 20th century, Columbia kept pace with the ever-evolving American academia. They moved to a swankier location in Morningside Heights and opened doors to women in 1983 with their eminent Columbia College Women program. Go, girl power!

One thing that has always stayed constant at Columbia? The groundbreaking Core Curriculum, set in 1919. Pioneering and way ahead of its time, this curriculum gives students wings to explore a bit of everything, from philosophy to science. Welcome to a buffet of subjects, folks!

It's in the DNA of Columbia to make noise. In the 60s, it was the heartbeat of student activism. Students protested against everything from civil rights injustices to the Vietnam War. Columbia students sure know how to stand up and be counted!

In 1995, our favourite college started the noteworthy financial aid policy. It made education accessible to everyone, and I mean, everyone, regardless of their financial standing. A class act, indeed!

So, my brilliant young minds and parents, craving a taste of polished education, what do you think? Doesn't it make you want to bag your dreams and head to Columbia College, a sanctum that aged like fine wine, always timeless, always innovative, and oh-so-engaging? Ready to inherit a part of its proud, multi-faceted lineage? So, get going, chase that Ivy League dream, for as they say, the world is your oyster!
