The University of Massachusetts, folks, has not been built in a day. Far from it, actually! You see, back in 1863, this big idea sprouted up in the minds of the folks who founded Massachusetts Agricultural College. Yes, sir, that was the humble beginning of what later grew into the University of Massachusetts we know and love today.
But it’s a bit of a tongue-twister, ain’t it, to say Massachusetts Agricultural College every time. Hence, the university folks shortened it to ‘Mass Aggie’, a homely nickname, equivalent to 'Desi Chhora'. Mind you, only 50 kids and four faculty members were part of this snuggly family initially. So, it wouldn't be wrong if we'd called it a 'Chhotta Sa Parivar', instead of implying it a university.
Now, fast forward to 1931, ‘Mass Aggie’ spurted its growth and got itself a new name -‘Mass State’. The reason, you ask? Well, it was no longer just an agricultural school but had courses in engineering and sciences too. This was when, my friends, ‘Mass State’ got ahead of its time and brought diverse streams under one roof, like our very own liberal arts 'Jugalbandi'.
But wait, the story doesn't end there. The folks at 'Mass State' still had an 'Icarus ki aasha' to soar higher. They didn't just want to be a state college. Nope. They wanted to be a university! So, in 1947, there was one more name change, turning from ‘Mass State’ to ‘UMass’. And just like that, UMass began its 'bahubali' journey with ‘University’ attached to its name.
Did it stop there? Not at all. You see, determination was an unyielding trait of UMass, just like our very own 'Resolute' Indian cricket team. By the 1960s, UMass got its first taste of ‘balle balle’ by setting up its first international collaboration with the University of Nigeria. UMass was not just a local lad anymore, but stepping up to becoming a global player.
And boy, did UMass grow! From four to over 1,300 full-time faculty members and from 50 to around 28,000 full-time students, UMass was not just 'apna ghar' for the local boys and girls but attracted students from all corners of the globe. Like Indian parents end up choosing 'Harivanshrai Bachchan' over 'Cool Dude' as their children's name, UMass became a reliable brand in the world of universities.
Today, that little sprout from 1863 has grown into a robust tree, with five campuses. Just like 'Amul': The Taste of India', the tale of UMass too has had rich flavours, a spicy mix of times, changes, and names. After all, the history of UMass is not just a history, it's a journey into transformations, adaption, and growth, much like our own 'Incredible India'!
