Let's take a stroll down memory lane, to a time when Davidson College was just a concept in the minds of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The year? 1837. It all began when The Concord Presbytery purchased a whopping 469 acres (1.90 km2) of land from a man named William Lee Davidson II. Now, this wasn't just any regular man. You should know, he purportedly had possession of approximately 25 enslaved individuals in Mecklenburg County and another 65 in Alabama. Davidson II, the progeny of Revolutionary War Commander Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, held ownership on the Beaver Dam Plantation in North Carolina. This plantation bore witness to the hard labor of 16-26 enslaved individuals.
And so, things started rolling. On a fine day in May 1835, the members of The Concord Presbytery got together, with varied plans for the land. They kicked off the land payment in the early days of 1837. And just like that, Davidson College was on the road to becoming a reality. Within just three years, by 1840, the college was already celebrating its first graduating batch. The diplomas bore the seal of Peter Stuart Ney, rumored to be the elusive Napoleon's Marshal Ney.
Davidson College, however, had to face the inevitable financial crunch that hit in the 1850s. But every problem comes with a solution. The College found relief in the form of "The Scholarship Plan", where aspiring Davidson students could pay upfront for a scholarship, edge off the tuition worries till the 1870s. Meanwhile, fortune favored the brave, and Davidson received an immense gift of $250,000 by Maxwell Chambers in 1856. Chambers, a man who amassed his wealth though slavery and the slave trade, made the college the wealthiest south of Princeton. To honor this mega-donation, the Chambers Building saw its inception.
Chambers' legacy also bequeathed Davidson College with a cotton mill in Salisbury, North Carolina following his death. Known as the Rowan Factory, it was sold to the Confederate government in 1861. It subsequently became a prison for the Confederate during the Civil War. The Chambers Building met with a catastrophic fire in 1921 but miraculously, it was rebuilt in 1929, funded by the grand Rockefeller family.
Fast forward to 1923, Davidson College saw the establishment of the Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in North Carolina. To date, more than 2000 men and women have been initiated into this honor society. And when the year turned to 1924, James Duke threw his grand Duke Endowment into the equation, pledging a staggering $15 million in 2007! Thanks to a deal by Dr. Blake R. Van Leer, then-president of Georgia Tech, and Davidson's president John Rood Cunningham, in 1954, a joint engineering program was introduced.
In 1972, the college took a progressive step by allowing women to enroll for degree courses. Some women had attended classes in the past, but it was Marianna "Missy" Woodward, in 1973, who became the first women graduate from Davidson! Some more years kick on and the college's board of trustees made a significant decision in 2005, permitting 20% non-Christian board members. This move, however, made John Belk, an affiliate of the college for more than six decades, resign. He resumed maintaining a good relationship with Davidson College and was honored in March 2006.
Finally, in 2007, Davidson made a significant leap to eliminate the necessity for students to borrow loans for their tuition. They made sure all demonstrated need was met with grants, student employment, parental contribution, and federal student loans. This move put them on the map as the first liberal arts college in America to take such an initiative. So, there you go, a beautiful walk down memory lane, reminiscing the illustrious history of Davidson College.
