Once upon a time, in 1849, a man named Rev. Leo Meyer hailing from Alsace in France made a grand voyage. He was on a quest to establish a presence for the Society of Mary in America. His journey, however, was halted in Cincinnati due to the spread of a terrible cholera epidemic. Instead, Bishop John Baptist Purcell of the Cincinnati diocese guided him to Emmanuel parish in Dayton. There, Father Meyer became a vital pillar, tending to the sick populations.
As he got acquainted with Dayton, Father Meyer crossed paths with a local farmer, John Stuart. Stuart, together with his wife, were mourning their infant daughter, Mary Louisa, who had lost her battle to cholera the previous year. The farm they called home, Dewberry Farm property, was too much of a reminder of their loss. The Stuarts longed to sell it and journey back to Europe, yearning for a fresh start.
On March 19, 1850, Father Meyer and three accomplices, the Marianist brothers Maximin Zehler, Charles Schultz, and Andrew Edel, offered the Stuarts solace. They purchased the picturesque 125-acre hilltop farm, promising to maintain the grave of Stuart's daughter. In return, they tendered a St. Joseph medal and pledged $12,000 at 6 percent interest. They then unveiled a new name for their property- Nazareth.
By July 1, 1850, just a few months from their agreement with the Stuarts, St. Mary's School for Boys was birthed in Nazareth. The school ventured into the world of education by opening its doors to 14 native young boys of Dayton. In 1860, Brother Zehler took the mantle as president, leading an institution that had grown to nearly 100 boys. They had been lucky enough to escape the cruelty of the Civil War due to their tender ages, allowing education in Nazareth to flourish.
The roots of the University of Dayton traced back to here. Buildings like Zehler Hall in 1865, the majestic Immaculate Conception Chapel in 1869, and St. Mary's Hall in 1870 stood as reminders of these humble beginnings. The establishment eventually got incorporated and gained authority to offer collegiate degrees under the State of Ohio in 1882.
As much as institutions grow, they also face hurdles. In 1913, during The Great Dayton Flood, St. Mary's College provided a safe refuge to victims, despite the hard times. They used resources available to them to aid those affected, displaying the compassion at the core of their mandate. In 1923, they found a new identity as the University of Dayton, reflecting their deep connection with Dayton city.
As the years progressed, the university became a beacon for students across the globe, accommodating them in a growing number of student housing in adjacent neighborhoods. The University of Dayton Research Institute found a new home in the former NCR World Headquarters, acquired in 2009. Over the years, the university also attracted partnerships with giant entities like GE Aviation, which established its research and development facility on campus in 2010.
The population of the University of Dayton has been ever-growing, with numbers hitting an all-time high in 1950 as veterans returned from World War II. Changes in the local education scene in the 1960s saw local enrollment wane but cast the University of Dayton into the national spotlight. In recent times, the institution has been a top choice for students outside Ohio, and international enrolment has been increasing significantly.
Established by the prestigious Society of Mary, The University of Dayton upholds the sacred Marianist educational philosophy. They have committed to continuing this legacy by implementing initiatives like the Marianist Educational Associates, set up in 2005, to educate lay leaders.
