Imagine this tale, many moons ago, in 1898 to be exact, when a determined Dutch priest, Abbot Bernard Pennings, ventured across seas from the land of dikes and tulips, the Netherlands, to establish something truly special - the St. Norbert College. This wasn't your average establishment though, this was the first educational institution ever to be curated under the sponsorship of the Premonstratensian order - a remarkable feat that still holds true.
Abbot Pennings, the founder of this grand institution was clearly not a man of small dreams. After setting up the institution for training young men to priesthood, Pennings took a swift pivot and kickstarted a commerce program for the lay students. He then retired in 1955 with his mission accomplished - a unique establishment that fostered spiritual and intellectual growth.
Next, let's jump to Dennis Burke's tenure. Burke has a vision and it was a big one - he foresaw the student population swelling to 2,000! Did it happen? We'll reveal that in a jiffy.

Eventually, in 2008, Thomas Kunkel, a former dean of the respected Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park, became St. Norbert's seventh president. His term oversaw numerous monumental constructions, including the Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center, the Gehl-Mulva Science Center, the Cassandra Voss Center, Michels Commons, Schneider Stadium, the Mulva Library, Gries Hall, Ariens Family Welcome Center and Todd Wehr Hall.
2017 marked the arrival of a new leader, Brian J. Bruess, alumnus of 1990, and former executive vice president and COO of St. Catherine University. After announcing his withdrawal as the president post the 2019–20 academic year, the college community was jolted and demanded discussions, resulting in a multiyear contract for Bruess. However, board drama ensued, causing four members, including the chair, to resign.
As we inch closer to the present, in March 2022, Bruess made headlines by announcing his move as the initial president of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University. This called for Kunkel's return as the interim president for the 2022-23 academic year. The history of St. Norbert College then took a thrilling turn in July 2023 with the appointment of Laurie Joyner as the ninth president, and more remarkably, the first woman president of the institution.
