Northern Illinois University, originating from an expansion of the normal school program established in 1857 in Normal, Illinois, has a captivating saga marked by several transformative milestones. Back in 1895, when the state legislature set up a board of trustees, only a few could predict the sweeping changes that would nudge the Northern Illinois State Normal School towards becoming the modern-day NIU.
A significant leap occurred in July 1917. In an effort to streamline governance, the Illinois Senate merged the boards of trustees of five state normal schools, including Northern Illinois State Normal School, into a single entity named the Normal School Board. This consolidation was just the beginning of a series of changes that would reshape the institution.
Within the span of next fifty-eight years, the school, as well as the governing board, underwent multiple rebrandings. The year 1921 stands out in the history, as it's when the institution received the designation Northern Illinois State Teachers College, gaining the power to award the four-year Bachelor of Education degree.
As time marched on, the Teachers College Board, which was the new name for the Normal School Board as of 1941, facilitated the college's progress. Prompted by a surge in postgraduate inquiries, in 1951, a groundbreaking decision was made to authorize the college to confer the Master of Science in education, marking the advent of its Graduate School.
Looking back at 1955, NIU experienced another milestone. The Illinois state legislature decided to diversify the college's offerings and renamed it to Northern Illinois State College. It was a momentous decision. The college now had the freedom to introduce courses beyond teacher education, allowing students to pursue Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees.
Recognizing its transformation into a comprehensive higher education facility, the state legislature honored the institution with a new name—Northern Illinois University on July 1, 1957. This transition not only symbolized the evolution of the institution but also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a rich, liberal arts education for every student.
Fast forward to 1965, the Illinois State Teachers College Board underwent another important transition. Morphing into the Board of Governors of State Colleges and Universities, its jurisdiction was expanded to include Northeastern University, Governor's State, and Chicago State Universities. By 1967, NIU had obtained self-governance under its newly formed board of regents, along with Illinois State University, and Sangamon State University.
This era of change didn't stop there. Acknowledging the need for an executive head for all three regent universities, a chancellor position was created by the board in 1984. This evolution culminated in 1996, when independent boards of trustees were established for each of the three universities, ensuring focused and personalized management.
However, the year 2008 was a moment of collective grief and fear for NIU, when an armed assailant opened fire on a campus crowd, leading to tragic loss of lives. Despite such trying times, NIU stood resilient, aiding the students and the staff in their healing journey.
As of now, the tale of NIU is marked by the tenure of 13 presidents who contributed to the growth and evolution of this robust institution. Looking back at its remarkable journey, NIU stands tall today, driven by its mission to enrich lives through quality education, while leaving indelible footprints in the sands of time.
