Packed with robust history, Piedmont University has a captivating origination tale that began decades ago. That's right - the journey started as far back as 1897, with Habersham County's locals in Georgia proudly founding the J.S. Green Collegiate Institute. The first to bear the title of 'President' at this new establishment was a certain Reverend Charles C. Spence, an individual who set the stage for the institute's future progression.
In the early days, around 1901, the reins of the college fell into the hands of the American Mission Board, steered largely by New England Congregational Churches. The institute didn't just change hands - its identity evolved as well. And so, the J.S. Green Collegiate Institute shed its initial avatar, readying itself for the future under the new moniker 'Piedmont College.' The change was more than cosmetic, representing the eponymous geographic region.
Fast-forward to 1948! Piedmont College began a new chapter under James Walter's stewardship as an independent institution. Despite this, it held onto its roots, preserving its connections with the United Church of Christ (UCC) and the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC). Their common thread? A link back to the Congregational tradition, once firmly held by the Methodists.
In 1994, the winds of change blew once again. The institute soared to new heights, expanding its offerings by adding Business and Nursing & Health Sciences schools to the existing Arts and Sciences and Education programs. Around this time, the seeds of Piedmont were also sown in Athens, Georgia, where a new campus was set up. And that wasn't all - it took a further leap, introducing off-campus graduate education courses throughout the state.
As the years rolled by, the Demorest campus blossomed. The college saw a bevy of additions, like the Arrendale Library; the Stewart Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology, and the impressively streamlined Swanson Center for Communications and the Performing Arts. The growth spurt included new athletic and housing facilities like the Mize Athletic Center, the Smith Williams Art Studios, and, eventually, in 2015, the Student Commons. It also created room for residency, adding five dorms and 48 apartment-style residences.
However, 2019 brought unexpected turbulence. Accusations of sexual assault against Piedmont College President James Mellichamp by highly tenured professor Rick Austin, who was also the mayor of Demorest, shook the quarters. Although the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission could not establish the breach of statutes, the accusations resonated in the public sphere, and the university took legal action.
In retaliation, Piedmont College lodged a lawsuit against Demorest City in May 2021, insisting Austin relinquish his tenured position and resign as mayor. At the crux of the dispute was an alleged violation of constitutional rights, specifically the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. This violation came into the picture when a water and sewage fee rate hike was levied solely against the college by the city council of Demorest and Mayor Austin, starting in 2019.
As the wheels of justice turned, Austin responded with a lawsuit against Piedmont’s Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee members. He claimed a conspiracy to obstruct justice and retaliation for his accusations. All in all, a fascinating throw of events that marked the university's history.
Drawing a curtain on April 2021, Piedmont College decided to don a fresh title and proudly embarked on a newly rechristened journey as 'Piedmont University.' Thus, the institute’s long and fascinating history continues to evolve, keeping its audience anticipating further exciting milestones.
