Back in 1877, imagine an adventurous fleet of Italian Jesuits, who, after being expelled from their homeland, braved the unknown and settled in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Here, they laid the foundations of a modest academic institution known as Las Vegas College. Little did they know, this humble beginning was a stepping stone towards the establishment of what we now recognize as the prestigious Regis University.
Come 1884, a new chapter was inked in the college's history. The Bishop of Denver, in his wisdom, extended an invitation to the devoted Jesuits, encouraging them to initiate another academic endeavor in Morrison, Colorado. The Jesuits stepped up to the challenge and opened the gates of Sacred Heart College. Fast forward to 1887 and the two separate entities, Las Vegas College and Sacred Heart College, made a monumental decision. They merged, relocating to the site we now associate with Regis University. Following the merger, it was christened as the College of the Sacred Heart.
It was in 1921, that the institution adopted the title of Regis College, paying homage to Saint John Francis Regis, a 17th-century Jesuit remembered for his benevolent services to the poor and the prostitutes in the mountainous terrain of Southern France. Interestingly, the preparatory section branched off in this period, evolving into the present-day Regis Jesuit High School.
The start of the 90s brought another transformation – in 1991, Regis College metamorphosed into Regis University, the name we all hold dear today. And if you're an ardent music fan, here's a thrilling trivia! In the late ‘60s and ‘70s, our campus boasted host to rock legends like Jimi Hendrix and the British rock band Queen, marking their first-ever concert in the United States on a sunny April 16, 1974.
Fast forward to 2011, Regis added another shining feather in its cap. It locked arms with the National University of Ireland, Galway, and ITESO, the respected Jesuit University of Guadalajara, Mexico. Together, they launched the first-ever online bilingual joint MBA degree program. Now, that's something to brag about, isn't it?
Did you know? Regis saw a change in its guard with Michael Sheeran stepping down as the University's President on June 1, 2012. His successor? It was none other than the dynamic John P. Fitzgibbons, S.J., who clinched the honor of being the 24th president of the university.
