In the chilly days of March 1881, an exceptional event was set in motion. Francis Marion Drake, a Union general during the Civil War and George T. Carpenter, known as a teacher and a pastor, established something extraordinary called Drake University. An educator and a soldier joining forces bring in mind a fascinating blend of knowledge and courage. Drake, in its infancy, was tied to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), but today it thrives as a non-denominational hub of learning.
Imagine, it all started with a single building christened Student's Home and 77 aspirants. By 1883, the campus heart, known as the Old Main was completed and is till date a bedrock of prime activities like national events, debates and it even houses the administrative offices, Levitt Hall, and Sheslow Auditorium.
Law enthusiasts, did you know that Drake's law school, established in 1865 by Chester C. Cole, a prominent name in the Iowa Supreme Court, is one the most ancient west of the Mississippi River? Only Saint Louis University School of Law pipped us to the post!
Drake is not new to cultural diversity either. In fact, as early as 1886, Drake saw students from far-off corners like China, Persia, Armenia, and Japan becoming a part of its fraternity. The first on-campus library bloomed in 1908, which was indeed a notable event. Drake's law school is privileged to be associated with the Order of the Coif and the archives of the National Bar Association, the nation's largest collective of predominantly African American lawyers and judges.
A significant addition to the university’s library was made in 1937 and fondly called the Cowles Library.
