Back in the fancy free days of 1906, a bunch of Detroit highbrows had a grand idea. They thought, why not start a school that teaches this thing called art and design? And so, they kicked off what we now know as the illustrious College for Creative Studies (CCS).
Now, you may be thinking, 1906? That’s a donkey’s years ago! Well, you’d be right. Art and design weren't big-time popular then, much like that silent movie actor, what’s his name, Charlie Chaplin. The school started off as a humble 'Society of Arts and Crafts (SAC),' under the leadership of a chap named Hugh P. Baker. Back in the day, it wasn't much more than a little Sunday drawing school, but don't we all start from somewhere, right?
Jumping ahead to 1926, America was jazzing it up, and our little school too decided to make some noise. The group decided they needed a proper headquarters, something that screamed 'We're here to stay!' So they shelled out some big bucks and built the Arts and Crafts Building. Fancy, isn't it?
Years swept past and as the school grew, so did its reputation. It started getting noticed. By 1958, the 'Society of Arts and Crafts' moniker was starting to sound a bit dated. Much like bell-bottoms, it was time for a change. So the big guys upstairs rebranded and voila! The 'Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts' was born.
1962 saw the school becoming mighty popular. So much so, that it was awarded full accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art (NADA). Now, doesn't that get your goose? The school was now a fully accredited college.
But wait, there's more! The big change came in 1975, when the college became known as the 'Center for Creative Studies: College of Art and Design’. Now that's a mouthful, isn’t it? The name change reflected a broader curriculum that was way ahead of its time, offering courses in industry and transportation design, that got everyone buzzing like bees on a honeycomb.
Anyways, the name-juggling didn’t stop there. In 2001, wanting to simplify things a bit and to keep with the times, the institution was renamed to what we now know as the 'College for Creative Studies.'
Now CCS is widely known for its world-class Bachelor of Fine Arts programs, and ranks high among the top design schools in the U.S. It offers 12 art and design majors, all the jazz basically, with more than 1,400 students hailing from different countries. It’s a melting pot of creativity, sorta like a Jackson Pollock painting!
So that’s the tale of our dear old CCS. From a Sunday drawing school to an internationally recognized institution, the College for Creative Studies has come a long way. But remember folks, in the words of Picasso, every artist was first an amateur. So, buckle up future Picassos, your journey at CCS is just about to begin!
