History George Washington University

Immerse yourself in the captivating tale of George Washington University’s inception! The tale begins with the dream of the United States' first president, George Washington, for a national university nestled in the heart of Washington, D.C. He gladly shared his vision with the Congress and others, hopeful to nurture the brightest minds of the young nation. But alas, a bequest of his shares in the Potomac Company, intended to help in establishing the university, lost value and no educational institution benefited from it.

Undeterred, the flame of this vision was kept alive by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, post President Washington’s demise. They fervently believed in his plan and stressed its realization as essential. The Baptist minister Luther Rice, in 1821, was able to finally materialize the dream with financial aid from James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun, and others. A grand edifice sprouted on what is known today as Meridian Hill, and the beginnings of the non-denominational Columbian College were formally cemented.

In 1824, a significant event was held - the university's first commencement. It was a proud moment in the history of Washington, D.C., with President Monroe, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, the Marquis de Lafayette, and more dignitaries gracing the occasion. The George Washington University we know today, however, has strong ties to the Freemasons. Masonic symbols are bedecked throughout the campus and even the ceremonial Bible used during the inauguration of the President traces back to Freemason George Washington.

Circa the Civil War, most of the then students were Southerners. With the outbreak of the war, a significant number of them had to abandon their studies to join the fight. The university also played a pivotal role during this tumultuous time serving momentarily as a Union military camp. Walt Whitman, the celebrated poet, frequented the camp, tending to his wounded sibling. To add to the intriguing history, the very site of these stories later transformed into an urban focal point at the intersection of 15th and H streets, rechristened as Columbian University in 1873.

The name we recognize today, The George Washington University, was conferred in 1904, following a pact with the George Washington Memorial Association. In honor of George Washington, the association generously contributed to establish Lisner Auditorium. The university, around 1912, redirected its main operations to the Foggy Bottom neighborhood within D.C.

As the years passed, the university became an incubator of numerous milestones. Some worth noting include the law school's reputation as the oldest law school in the District of Columbia and the medical school being the 11th oldest in the nation and the pioneer in the nation's capital. Meanwhile, the Elliott School of International Affairs, formalized in 1898, is part of an impressive portfolio of historical institutes.

Adding another feather to its cap, the university became a sanctuary for theoretical physics during the 1930s. The cosmologist George Gamow, stationed at GW, made remarkable contributions to the Big Bang theory. An announcement that startled the world was made at GW – the successful atom split by Otto Hahn on January 26, 1939.

The tale of the diverse history of George Washington University is packed with intriguing incidents. For instance, Thurston Hall, an undergraduate dormitory in the 1960s, transformed into a hotspot for anti-war student demonstrations during the Vietnam War. The university, in 1996, procured the Mount Vernon College for Women, which morphed into a co-ed Mount Vernon Campus in just a few years.

GW University has navigated through immense changes, hosting epoch-making events like the first presidential town hall to be webcast live in 1999. Appointing a new president, Thomas LeBlanc, in 2017. Further, in 2020, the university initiated dialogues on revising the names of its campus building and school moniker, in stride with the changing socio-cultural sentiments. By 2023, the university had a new president – Ellen Granberg, set to join office on July 1. George Washington's age-old dream now stands as a testament of time, filled with stories of grit, determination, and ceaseless evolution.
