History Mercy College

If there was a scroll to trace the history of Mercy College, it'd unroll all the way back to the year 1950. Can you believe it? Nearly more than seven decades ago a humble yet path-breaking idea sprouted in the mind of a collective of Sisters belonging to the Saint Francis of Pisa. They were brilliant women who possessed the audacious goal of shaping the education landscape of Dobbs Ferry, New York.

Sprinkling seeds of wisdom in a small timbered house, the Sisterhood started with their maiden project, an institute solely for women who were eager to learn. It was an enlightening venture started with just 12 students, a tale of simple beginnings and big dreams. A dozen pupils transformed into hundreds and then into thousands, growing by leaps and bounds with every passing year.

By the time the '70s arrived, a wave of change swept across the country. Bringing the curtains down on an era, the college decided it was time to let the boys in too. Talk about keeping up with the times! The all-girls club was no longer just for girls, making Mercy College coeducational.

Around the same time, a guy called Dr. William Byron decided to revamp old ways of learning. The arrival of this sharp-witted, foresighted, and charismatic president gave an adrenaline injection to the institute. Academic magic was in the air!

Under his leadership, the college received accreditation from the Middle States Association. Now it was not just a college but a fully accredited institution. Purses full of dreams started turning into certificates and degrees, guiding its students to face the real world with confidence.

The '80s were a game-changer. Mercy College was now empowered to confer Master's degrees. The countdown to turning into a full-fledged university was seeing light. A quiet revolution was happening here, stretching the educational horizons one great step at a time.

When early 2000 hit, Mercy College was riding waves so high, they were hitting the sky. With several degree programs, dedicated faculty with proficiency across disciplines and students from around the world pouring in – the college had done a full 180.

This transformation from an adorable little college to a university that's a force to be reckoned with had taken the education world by pleasant surprise. It was like that quiet kid in class who one day blows everyone away by winning the national spelling bee – quite impressive, isn't it? So, you see, the story of Mercy College is an inspiring example of resilience, perseverance, and growth.

There you have it: a snapshot of the exciting journey of Mercy College, your potential future alma mater. A seed in 1950, today it stands as a colossal tree of knowledge. Who would’ve thunk it, right? From a girls’ club to an institute of global repute, the place has seen and embraced it all. So, gear up my friends, for it might be your time to add to its illustrious history!
