Set your mind back in time to May 15, 1891. This day marked the establishment of the Delaware College for Colored Students, a remarkable feat by the Delaware General Assembly. Just two years later in 1893, the college was renamed the State College for Colored Students to avoid confusion with NJ's Delaware College, exclusively for white students at that time.
As we delve a step further into the past, into the year 1898, did you know that this is when it first started to award degrees? An exciting journey wasn't it? But, hold on tight because it gets even more intriguing.
Fast forward to 1945, and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education awarded the college provisional accreditation. What does this mean, you may ask? It was a significant milestone in the college's history, signifying that it was recognized for its rigorous academic programs and adherence to educational standards.
Just a blink of an eye later, in 1948 to be precise, the educational institution was rechristened once more, this time as Delaware State College. Accreditation was a bit of a roller coaster ride, being revoked in 1949 only to be regained triumphantly in 1957. Kudos, wouldn't you agree?
Let's jump ahead and land in 1993 when it donned its current avatar Delaware State University. The University is known for some remarkable firsts, including being one of the first historically black colleges and universities with a no-smoking policy.
It's 2015 and the university creatively begins a strategy to halt smoking on campus. Dividing the campus into four smoking zones and generously providing education about quitting smoking. Come August of the same year, the university took a giant leap by implementing a completely tobacco-free policy.
In recognition of its noteworthy efforts, DSU received the ACAS Health Leadership Award in 2017. This prestigious award was an accolade by public health establishments, Anti-smoking organizations, and the Arizona NAACP.
Now, we are in December 2020, a significant period indeed. On this marked point, MacKenzie Scott bestowed a generous donation of $20 million on Delaware State University. Unprecedented, it was the largest gift the university had ever received.
Finally, take a mental stroll with me to July 1, 2021, a day marked by a notable event. Delaware State University finalized its acquisition of a 157-year-old private institution founded by the Methodist Church in 1873, known as Wesley College. This remarkable feat made DSU the first historically Black University to acquire an institution not of historically Black lineage.
The former Wesley campus, owing to its close proximity to Downtown Dover, was appropriately renamed DSU Downtown. Even better, it housed the College of Health and Behavioral Science boasting programs in Public and Allied Health, Psychology, and Social work on its spacious 41-acre site. To pay homage to its past, the merger inaugurated the Wesley College of Health and Behavioral Sciences.
Stay tuned, for Delaware State University's journey is far from over, and the future undoubtedly holds more exciting adventures and milestones.
