Picture this. It's the 6th of March, 1909. The Second Oklahoma State Legislature is in session and a monumental decision is being made. Durant, Oklahoma is chosen as the stage for a new normal school. The school has a big role to play, it is to serve the academic needs of a massive 12-county region inclusive of Atoka, Bryan, Carter, and Choctaw, to name a few. Thus, began the saga of the Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
Flash forward to June 14th, 1909, the institutions doors swing open for the first time with the name of Southeastern State Normal School. Imagine the excitement, the anticipation. Where there was once vacant land, now stands a monument to education, serving the students of high school and the college freshman and sophomore years! The school did not even have a permanent building at this time. Its first few academic sessions were conducted in temporary quarters with the first stone of its main building being laid in January 1911 and later christened as Morrison Hall.
The primary vision of Southeastern revolved around training the educators of the future. Inatorially, the graduates of this two-year program were awarded life teaching certificates, a reward for their dedication to education and learning. Fast forward to 1921, the institution is now a four-year college and proudly wears the title of Southeastern State Teachers College. Look at the library - complete in 1928, a nod to the college's devotion to learning and the pursuit of knowledge. The primary function remained that of teacher and educators with Bachelor of Arts in Education and Bachelor of Science in Education being the first degrees the institution authorized.
In 1939, a turning point for the University! The institution broadened its academic horizon, with new courses ushered in leading to the non-education degrees Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science. In perfect timing, the college adopts a new name; Southeastern State College. In 1954, the courses on offer have now grown to include a graduate program leading to the Master of Teaching degree, the institution's first Master’s program. This degree was later changed to Master of Education in 1969.
Now let's move to May 27, 1968. A significant date for the institution as the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education designated Southeastern as an Area Community College. A commitment was made to move in the direction of providing greater post-secondary educational opportunities, and the curriculum expanded to include more areas such as business, technology, aviation, and conservation.
In 1974 came another evolution of the institution's name, this time to the Southeastern Oklahoma State University, a title reflective of its expansion and diversity. Since then, there have been numerous academic and institutional reorganisations punctuated by the growth to three academic schools; the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business and the School of Education and Behavioural Science.
Now, fast forward to today, Southeastern has a renowned reputation and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy to uphold the integrity of the institution. It has seen various presidents come and go, most notably Dr. Leon Hibbs with a 20-year tenure under his belt. Each presidendy ushering in a new era, with Dr. Thomas Newsom as the latest in April 2020.
Lastly, we mustn’t forget about the students who have battled the university policies and the attention their conflicts brought to the University. One such incident was the tenure battle that Dr. Rachel Tudor, an assistant professor at the university, faced when her application was turned down not once but twice. However, perseverance triumphed, and she won her case, with the jury declaring the University’s actions as gender discrimination.
To end, let us shine the spotlight on a controversial incident in 2013 involving five African-American college football students. Suspended and scholarships revoked over charges of conspiracy, the case brought forth vehement civil rights activism and ignited a firestorm of public uproar. A testament to how Southeastern, standing tall in the eye of the storm, continues to attentively adapt its policies to the ever-changing landscape of its demographic.
This vast and challenging timeline is truly testament to the Southeastern Oklahoma State University's dedication to nurturing minds and shaping futures. Every step of the way, they have risen to the occasion, expanded their horizons, and adapted to the changing times.
