Over a century ago, nestled within the vibrant Hayti District, the dream of James E. Shepard sprang to life. His vision? Forming an educational beacon for the colored race, known as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua. The inspiration from the educational movement, Chautauqua, which was born in the Northeast, helped shape this institution that was chartered in 1909 and opened its doors on July 5, 1910.
Believe it or not, Woodrow Wilson, future US president, played a substantial role in the establishment of the school. In 1915, the school underwent a transformation, selling and reorganizing itself into the National Training School. Around the same time, a New York philanthropist, Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, who had a burning passion for education, began supporting the institution.
Fast forward to 1923, the then privately-funded institution received recognition as a state-funded school and came to be known as the Durham State Normal School for Negroes. By 1925, their educational offerings broadened, inducting a wider range of four-year programs that led to a renaming procession, the North Carolina College for Negroes was born, cherished as the nation's first state-supported liberal arts college for black students.
Our journey ferries us to 1937 when the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools stamped the college as an "A" class institution. By 1957 the college was a proud member of that association. Graduate courses in various disciplines, like Arts and Sciences, Law, and Library Science, soon found a home here.
The year 1947 brought about a couple of significant events. The General Assembly metamorphosed the institution's name to North Carolina College at Durham. This year also marked the passing of Shepard, the pioneer. Alfonso Elder, the head of the Graduate Department of Education, succeeded him as the president in 1948.
The institution continued its upward trajectory. We can't forget to mention the creation of the NCCU School of Business, as well as programs in public administration and criminal justice, under Albert N. Whiting, the then president and chancellor. It was in 1969 when the General Assembly further elevated the status of the institution to a regional university, and with that, the title we know today, the North Carolina Central University (NCCU), was coined.
Exciting times lay ahead. The university became a part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972, under The Consolidated University of North Carolina organization. Leadership mantle shuffled between LeRoy T. Walker, Tyronza R. Richmond, Julius L. Chambers, James H. Ammons, Charlie Nelms, and Debra Saunders-White in 2013, who became the first woman to serve as a permanent chancellor.
After Saunders-White's untimely demise in 2016, the institution saw Johnson O. Akinleye steer the university as the 12th chancellor. As the leader, he introduced a robust online, distance-education program, NCCU Online, and created K-12 initiatives, transformed institution security strategy while expanding academic partnerships with community colleges.
