History Lafayette College

Barely a week after the end of Christmas festivities in 1824, James Madison Porter, son of General Andrew Porter, and a group of residents from Easton, Pennsylvania, gathered in White's Tavern. Their profound discussions revolved around founding a college in their quaint town. Interestingly, the name they unanimously agreed upon, Lafayette College, was inspired by the General Lafayette—an acclaimed French war veteran known for his pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War. His visit to New York during his grand US tour in 1824-1825 sparked in them tremendous respect for his talents and virtues. In honor of Lafayette's remarkable freedom fight, they decided to institute an educational institution deeply rooted in the freedom of education.

It was March 9, 1826, when Pennsylvania Governor John Andrew Shulze gave Lafayette College its charter for operation. A distinguished 35-member board of trustees was also established, adopting a governance style that the college would carry on up to the present. Porter, together with two other equally esteemed lawyers, Jacob Wagener and Yale-educated Joel Jones, drafted an ambitious education plan that would lay the foundation for Lafayette’s prominence in liberal arts.

Fast forward to May 1826, the board held elections for key positions. Thomas McKeen was appointed as Treasurer, Joel Jones as Secretary, and James Madison Porter confirmed the prestigious role of the college's first president. However, it wasn't until the spring of 1829 that the college officially opened its doors to students.

Guided by Reverend John Monteith, Lafayette welcomed in its first cohort of eager students in 1832. However, it was only after Reverend George Junkin, a well-respected Presbyterian Minister, was elected as the college's first official president that the college started shaping up. He was instrumental in relocating the all-male Manual Labor Academy of Pennsylvania to Easton. This significantly played into creating a college curriculum that involved manual labor, mirroring the focus on Military and Civil Engineering. Even more captivating was Junkin's support to liberate African Americans and offer them education at Lafayette for missionary work in Liberia, though this move received varying reactions.

The escalating tension between Porter and Rev. Junkin led to a series of events. Junkin resigned in 1841, which led the trustees into the contemplation of a religious affiliation for better financial stability. Come 1854, Lafayette found its connection with the Presbyterian Church, a move that led to financial gains and influenced a gradual spike in students' enrollment. In fact, the close-knit class of 1857 marked the beginning of Greek fraternities at Lafayette; an initiative taken while remaining discrete until 1915 due to perceived divisiveness.

Lafayette's contribution during World War I is remarkable. Amidst preparing students for military enlistment and farm work to back up the war effort, the campus also functioned as a war camp and served as grounds for training in mechanical trades. Professor Beverly Kunkel played a leading role in organizing The Lafayette Ambulance United, Section 61, United States Army Ambulance Corps. The college resumed normal academics in 1919, post-war.

During the Great Depression, between 1930 and 1934, the enrollment drastically diminished. But creative new scholarships, scholarship loans, and a two-week long Engineering Guidance Conference pulled the college through the challenging time. William Mather Lewis, taking over as the college’s president, launched the Decade of Progress capital campaign. Starting off as an anniversary celebration of Lafayette’s engineering program, the campaign aimed to fund improvements around the college. Even though it fell short of its goal, the campaign helped put Lafayette on the growth path.

Entering the 60s, with a vision to embrace societal dynamics, faculty at Lafayette pushed for the college to become co-educational, a move that materialized in 1970 with an intake of 146 women. Then as the turn of the century approached, in 2004 a significant review of the college's formal relationship with the Presbyterian church was sought. Although an affiliation was retained, Lafayette did not join the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities.

In a remarkable celebration of General Lafayette’s 250th birthday in 2007, Lafayette College launched a series of lectures and campus dedications. As the campus welcomed Dr. Alison R. Byerly, the first female president of Lafayette in 2013, a new era of growth was initiated. Under her leadership, and later Nicole Hurd's, the college continues to manifest its commitment to heightened academic performance, increase financial aid, and pursue infrastructural expansion. As a proud testament of over 190 years of growth, respect for freedom, and the constant pursuit of excellence, Lafayette College continues to create a lasting educational legacy for generations of students.
