Rewind the time and place yourself on December 24, 1890. That's when Oklahoma's Territorial Legislature ignited the spark that would eventually become the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). Pioneering the public education scene, UCO ranked in as the second oldest institution, only slightly preceded by the University of Oklahoma. It was a chilly November in 1891 when the first classes gathered, an entire month ahead of its competitor, Oklahoma A&M College (now recognized as Oklahoma State University).
The gears began to move swiftly. On one condition - that the city of Edmond would donate 40 acres of land and $5,000 in bonds. The generous Anton Classen answered the call, donating the demanded land. Ten acres of this land were designated for the educational establishment, while the rest was smartly parceled and sold to raise extra funds.
Nominated as the first President of Territorial Normal School of Oklahoma, Richard Thatcher ushered in the first class of 23 enthusiastic learners on November 1, 1891. It was held in the humble setting of the Epworth League Room, inside the yet-to-be-furnished First Methodist Church. This historical landmark was etched with a granite marker by the Central Oklahoma Normal School Historical Society in 1915.
Just a year after its foundation, during the summer of 1892, the campus saw the construction of 'Old North'. This was the very first building constructed with the sole purpose of higher education in the Oklahoma Territory. By 1897, a group of five students became the first class to graduate from the Normal School.
A considerable change came in 1904 when Territorial Normal morphed into Central State Normal School, three years before the dawn of statehood. On the brink of the roaring twenties, in 1919, the school took another leap by attaining the status of a four-year teachers’ college.
Moving forwards, the Oklahoma Legislature green-lit the institution to confer Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees by 1939. With this major milestone reached, a name change was in order. Say hello to Central State College.
Politics and education often entwine tightly and UCO was no exception. With changing state governors came a revolving door of presidents and even some faculty members. A noticeable stability came during the reign of President Max. W. Chambers, post-1950, who bravely implemented a ban on campaign donation solicitations from faculty members.
Look upon the university's 75th anniversary in 1966, and notice a significant symbol embedded in its history - the coat of arms. This masterstroke was conjured by yearbook student editor Dorthy Forbes along with three of her colleagues. Their creation was stamped with approval by President Garland Godfrey. Today, this coat of arms graces many structures and stationeries within the University, profoundly resonating with its motto, 'Ubi Motus Est,' or 'Where Movement Is.'
The final name change occurred in 1990, leading us to the University of Central Oklahoma as we know it today. During its long and illustrious history, 22 presidents and three acting/interim presidents have skillfully steered the course of UCO. Nestled within the folds of time, it carries the essence of the past while steadfastly focusing on the future of education. Now, wouldn't you be excited to partake in such a vibrant and evolving educational journey?
